So I signed up for the OHEC this weekend on a last minute whim. I have no idea what to expect, what kind of things will be taught. Is it focused on hunting regulations and safety, do they talk about animal identification and field dressing, gun safety, etc. etc? I haven't been able to find the manual anywhere online so I'm just curious about what topics are covered.

Yeah everything you mentioned... its pretty broad and not very deep... better than nothing though and was at least somewhat interesting to me.

When I did it 3 years ago I believe it was 2 days? Then we came back the following Sat am to do the test. It gave us the whole week to read over the manual they gave us, which my friend and I did one evening. Needless to say we didn't really need to do that, would have been better just to power through and do the test on day 2. Test is very easy as long as you pay attention in the class.

Thanks for the replies, it really did just touch on everything and the exam was as straightforward as the PAL exam. Had a very good instructor, enjoyed the course a lot. Two more licensed hunters in Ontario (wife took the course as well).
Well, technically not until I'm done at ServiceOntario this afternoon I guess, but whatever. :)

What did they cover about field dressing, other then "do it"?

Its been so long I cant remember. And honestly, field dressing can't really be learned until your up to your elbows in a big game animals belly anways lol

Funny..... Every time I shoot what's in your avatar, I end up up to my belly button in it..... Lol...... I remember in the early 90's the hunting course had a small piece on field dressing deer.... Mostly just a diagram of where to cut with no advice on how deep etc..... I imagine a lot of guys that took that course had unpleasant experiences down the road..... Lol

Yes, I should have said "at least up to your elbows".lol

I love this video

Yeah just a most basic description, mostly just impressing that it needed to be done ASAP, after attaching the tag. They stressed that the course was not about teaching us to hunt but more to teach safety and ethics. They very highly recommended going out with a mentor to learn the ropes. Makes sense.
