I can't afford both right now, but I really want a wheel gun in .22LR.

I've decided to go with Ruger over Alfa and S&W.

SP101 - $800
GP100 - $1000.

What is it about the GP that gives it that $200 premium over the SP101?

What are the biggest differences between the two?

many thanks for your advise and wisdom! :)

Used SP101's pop up for around $600 so that might help if you are on a budget. The trigger pull out of the box is heavy as you probably already know. I bought a spring from Wolf but in the end have decided to leave the stock spring in place. After thousands of dry fire pulls the trigger has smoothed out but the pull is still on the heavy side...... I like it for strength training of my trigger finger.
Fit and finish of mine is not as nice as a 9mm Alfa that I have..... I wouldn't dismiss the Alfa to quickly as a quality choice at a budget price.

Aside the fact that the gp100 is unobtainium right now? It's a bigger revolver. That's about it. And the sp-101 is closer to 900$ new now.

One of the retailers here listed one a few weeks ago but I think it was around $1200 after tax and shipping.

If I recall a previous post, you were looking for a smaller framed pistol. If grip size is an issue, go for the sp101.
I guess the main difference is size, number of rounds, and barrel lengths available (4.2 for the sp101 an 6 for the GP100) Quality should be the same.

When I was deciding on a .357 I handled an SP101. I found the grip a bit small for me, pinky wasn't getting much contact. I went with a GP, not sure that would matter much in a .22.

Have the SP101 in 22LR, agree with this.. vs our semi's in 9mm, it was VERY VERY heavy.. almost thought something was wrong with it, but as stated, dry fire it a LOT (yes, it's ok on this particular firearm.. won't damage it), and it does "smooth up" a little... but it still feels heavy.

At the range I prefer to left thumb #### the trigger manually rather than pull it all the way.

Find it very accurate, easy to clean, light weight (it's actually my wives 22.. I have the Ruger 22/45 semi), and she loves the small grip and low weight.

617 is generally only 1000$ https://durhamoutdoors.ca/collections/pistol-1/products/smith-wesson-617-6-22lr-10-shot-6?variant=1468534084
I say "only" 1000$ because the second you handle one you know where that money went

Congrats you found 1 website with outdated prices... Jump on it. So yes it can be as expensive and why exactly would the Ruger need an "advantage" to be price similar to the Smith? Just 'cause?... They are both good revolvers. I don't see why the Ruger would need something extra to be allowed to compete with the Smith.

Because the 617 and the 17 have a long history of being the best .22 revolver on the market that's why, how long has a .22lr gp100 been on the market? The gp100 is an awesome revolver but the main appeal was that it was cheaper than the 686, but the price gap is negligible now.

all the back and forth is making me waffle, LOL!

I've gone back to seriously considering the Alfa Proj .22LR/WMR in 4.5" SS...or the SP101. I've got small hands, so smaller framed guns are more comfortable.

haven't seen a 22LR GP100 yet but the SP101 is a great little pistol.
yes, the trigger pull is heavier than a semi-auto but remember that the pull also cocks the hammer.

Get the SP-101...I have one in .357 and with the lighter hammer spring, stainless shims on the hammer, and Hogue grips, it's a beautiful shooter...balanced and feels good in the hand. I have a GP-100 with a 6" barrel as well, and I've polished the mechanicals, shimmed the hammer, and put in a lighter spring...it's a nice accurate target shooter, but I like the SP-101 the most.

Single action out? Ruger Bear cat is smallish.

yeah, I have no interest in single action. modern revolvers only please. ;)

edit - actually, that's not quite true. one day I might buy something like a Cold Navy cause their big and so bad ass looking...or something similar. love to cross my arm over for it to rest on and take pot shots at a distance target, LOL!
