Ordered my first pistol!!!

Hi guys! Well, I finally took the plunge, and got my RPAL, its on its way here.... So, with that done, I ordered my first pistol. First off, I really, really wanted to buy an H&K P7, but, its seems they are as rare as hens teeth, so, while my hunt for the P7 goes on, i figured i'd need a quality pistol to practice up on. I looked at the Glock, Ruger, Sig's, and the others. Now what i finally settled on, I believe is a good choice. I ordered an Arsenal Strike One Speed (9mm), in bronze and black. After doing a wack of research, I really like what I seen on the Arsenal. The ultra low bore to grip height and in line barrel really caught my attention, along with their proprietary locking block system.

I really wanted fully adjustable sights, so I opted for the "Speed" model, with the adjustable sights, and lightened slide. Im also ordering the DPM Systems Technologies (DPMS), Multiple Springs Recoil Reduction System. Its comes highly recommended in the reviews I read up on it, allowing for even faster follow ups, and substantial recoil reduction.

Like I stated earlier, I've always wanted the H&K P7, as I've read many times, its arguably the best 9mm ever made, and I really like the H&K stuff. The P7 is a very hard to find,and when it does come up for sale, a very expensive pistol. But I will eventually have one. In the mean time, I think the Arsenal will do a fine job! I have a rough plan, purchase wise for my pistol part of the hobby.... After the Strike One, I will be looking for a Ruger MII .22lr, with the bull barrel. They are super accurate, and cheap to shoot (my son will appreciate this). After that, I'm not too sure, i'll play it by ear ;-)

Now all I have to do, is have a little patience and wait for the RPAL to arrive in the mail, I'd imagine by mid may, I should have the license, and hopefully the pistol will be at my LHS for pickup as well.... Anyways, thought i'd just share in my excitement, and please, LMK what you all think about my first choice in pistol purchase! i'm curious!

I have no experience with the Arsenal... but I can tell you to kiss your gun plan goodbye! You will end up owning damn near every gun available to you :)

Oh! And I've owned 3 Ruger Mk(whathaveyou) pistols and they just aren't as good as a Buckmark. I'm absolutely no Browning fan... but their Buckmark is an excellent pistol! (Order a nice slab side... their just sweet)

Fabulous that you are on the road to pistol heaven.... Just a thought (that most people won't acknowledge...) accuracy is achieved through technique - and if your technique sucks - then accuracy will too - they are inextricably linked. So buying a .22 to learn good technique (mostly trigger control) is a great choice at for your lad too. Anyone can punch holes at 5m - set your sight on 15-20m- you should be able to drill the X - if you can't - it is you not the pistol. Be confident - you can do it - but you will need to train and lots of practice. It starts with dry firing (sight on a wall and press the trigger (no ammo!)) and mastering a 22 before the 9 (focus on the front sight only!). You may need to buy a press - but 9mm is relatively good value - but test ammo off a rest - you would be surprised how much difference ammo makes (even the same manufacturer different lot 22 as well as 9mm).

Pistol is really hard - many people can't do it - so master the 22 and migrate to the 9mm. (Boring but a proven route).

I have shot the Strike One. It is a very nice pistol concept...on paper. I know two guys with the gun. Both had nothing but problems. FTF and FTEs galore. One went to a Glock, the other to the Springfield XD.
The low bore axis is great and the gun has an interesting trigger feel. Accuracy is fine. Gun looks great, just doesn't work so good.
Hope your experience will be better.
I had a P7M8. Sold it last year. Now, THAT was a nice gun! Heavy for its size, super well made, reliable and butt balanced. If you ever find one and plan on shooting it a lot, make sure the gun has a chance to cool down. Even the heat shield on the M8 isn't much of a protector.

... but if your lucky enough to be member of a "quiet" range, then a .22 pistol can be a ton of fun. Changing targets regularly, dueling tree battles, shooting cans, shooting empty shot shells at 25 yards... it can be great!... If your at a busy club though, yeah... it can suck. But it is worth the cheap trigger time non the less.

The other way to get plinking quietly is air pistol - they are great for getting technique down (cheaply). D&L Airgin (dlairgun.com) they will be able to advise you on one to start

It is overrated. If it was as good as it's proponents say, it'd be as common as a Glock. Once you have a chance to use one, and to compare it to more widely-issued pistols, you'll understand why it is relatively uncommon; it has some serious limitations, and the P7M8 isn't any better than more popular pistols - like the Glock 19 - that also happen to cost less than half of the price of a P7M8.

Objectively, for just about any role, and even without any consideration of cost, the Glock 19 is a much better choice.

I predict that twenty years from now the "best in the world" Strike One will have been discontinued...and lost to history...along with the VP70Z, the P7 and the P7M8.

Congrats on ur new toy and good luck trying to not buy every handgun u see now lololol.
Dont overlook the FNS series of handguns, they are great value, super reliable and got a long history to back them up.

Just a quick question, do you have any real world practical experience with the P7? Or are you just basing your opinion on reading....? also, i appreciate your opinion, but, I am kind of an HK fan. And I like to buy quality stuff, and see the value of the P7 does not drop. I could consider the purchase of the P7 as an investment. If I do find one for a good deal, It would more than likely hold its value over time, or increase in value, depending wha tI'll end up paying. So, with that said, at some point in time my collection will have a P7 in it.... ;-)

Yeah!! I'd love to get an FN 57, but im not sure they are available in Canada, or may be Prohib.? I'll check it out when I have time.... :)

I just watched a review on the strike one, looks like a cool pistol, let us know how it runs for u, like a long term range report, I really liked the innovative design on this gun.
 
FN 57's are just restricted like any other pistol in Canada, believe around the $1600 mark. Ammo is the problem with them, it can be tough to find. Online is your friend for that though.

Yes, I too believed the hype, and I too planned to buy the first P7M8 that became available. A friend - a real HK fan - beat me to it, thankfully. He saved me about $2000. and a lot of disappointment; one range session was enough to make clear to me that the P7M8 is out of production for several good reasons. Excessive heat. Uncommon operation. Weight. Magazine capacity. Cost. Relative rarity. Obsolescence. Like I said before, it's uncommon. Some guys want uncommon, but most don't, because uncommon is uncommon for a reason. Aside from any inherent vices - and with the P7M8 there are a few - when it comes to handguns, uncommon also means that magazines and other replacement parts and holsters are likely to be ongoing issues. Maybe there is some role that the P7M8 performs better than the G19, but I can't imagine one (aside from a place in an HK collection). The P7M8 is out of production, have I mentioned that?

P.S.: Gold holds it's value.

People collect Model Ts and 55 Stangs. They are obsolete too.
I hear ya about the shortcomings of the P7 series but when you hold one, you KNOW you are holding quality. The fit is immaculate.
The one thing the P7M8/13s do better than the G19 is that they are truly ambidextrous guns.
I believe the esteemed Jeff Cooper said the P7 was the only 9mm he might consider using.
No one ooohs and ahhhs when you show them a Glock, everyone ooohs and ahhhs when a P7 shows up at the range or gunstore.
This coming from a guy who still owns a Glock and sold his P7M8!!

So far I LOVE this pistol.... Its by far the easiest pistol to shoot, that i have ever shot! Its extremely "instinctive"! recoil is almost NIL.... and itll eat up anything I can throw at it, with no FTF, FTE, stovepiles, light strikes, etc.... heck, buddy has a Sig p226, and with cheap Barnaul steel case 9mm, he gets jams, and light strikes, well I got 1000 rnds of this stuff, and I put 200 through it tonight, and it functioned 100%. This pistol is absolutely a dream to shoot!
