Is there any requirement in Canada for (Customs) documentation when sending pre 1890 original percussion revolvers to Sweden?

This is not a problem from the U.S.----no documentation required.

There is a Swedish dealer that has been buying Civil War revolvers from the U.S. for many years for sale to Swedish collectors as original antiques don’t have to be licensed.

Pinfire, rimfire and centerfire are all licensed guns whenever they were made. These rules also make replicas of CW-guns licensed guns.

Major problem is finding a Shipper. UPS, Fedex and Canada Post won't ship firearms anymore outside of Canada even Antique ones.

Thanks JP---I did not know this.

So--- we can buy U.S. Civil War revolvers from the U.S. but we can't sell any of these guns into the U.S. or anywhere outside of Canada ?

This needs to be verified. If CP doesn't ship firearms outside of Canada that could still be OK for antiques as they are not classified as true firearms or weapons. Can someone verify or deny the supposed new rule ? (I have shipped tons of antique guns to USA in the recent past).

I think (hope) JP is in error on this statement.

Yes, US Postal Service does allow shipment of antique firearms to Canada

You can sell them it is finding a shipper to handle them that is hard. I think the only option is Air Canada Cargo, but you must go to the Airport in person for that.

- Canada Post

Canada Post does not allow the shipment of firearms even Antiques outside of Canada and it has been like that for several years. I know some shipments will make it through, but if discovered items will be seized by Canada Post. I know of a major dealer who had very valuable fireams seized and it took him several months and great expense to get them back.

This is what the fellow from Sweden said.

It’s no problem for me buying from USA. But I can’t ship something back if the seller has cheated me and sent me a gun that can’t be repaired. All the common distributors refuse to ship anything looking like a gun abroad from Sweden. If I use the more specialized gun distributors it will be VERY expensive. So, I only buy from sellers I trust. I have been buying for many years and have got “Gun friends” in USA who buy for me and check the guns before shipping to me. I have also got a “Red list”… When a parcel arrives for me I have to pay 12 % VAT for the value stated on the invoice placed in a plastic envelope outside the parcel and marked INVOICE so the customs easily can find it. AND it is very important to ship EXPRESS priority. If not shipped Express the parcel will end up at the customs in Malmö instead of Stockholm/Arlanda. And Malmö is the place where many of the un legal guns from the other side of the Baltic Sea come in. So, the customs there are very suspicious to any parcel that could contain anything related to guns.

Just went through this ,on a custom build ...Canada post ,UPS and Fed-Ex will not ship any firearms across the border CP uses Fed-Ex for their air service ...the only way is to use an exporter and it will be stamped (not a perfect plan for custom work ! ),some small carrier may do it , or find someone willing to walk it across the border endure the paperwork and ship from the US side .

Canada post for many years now has allowed true antique guns to be shipped to the USA from Canada. This is because antique guns are not recognised in Canada as firearms or weapons (the same is true with antique swords). The shipping contents label needed to state "pre-1898 rifle or pistol or musket."

Just when did Canada Post change the rules ?

I originally tripped over this Swedish dealer’s web site as he was offering a Remington-Rider D.A. fluted cylinder New Model Belt Revolver. (I have one.)
These revolvers are rare in the U.S. and I was surprised to find one in Sweden.
I later learned that this Swedish fellow has close contacts in the U.S .that he buys from.

This will give you an idea of what these CW percussion revolvers sell for in Sweden.
Their customers are a mix of collectors and shooters.
Most popular revolvers for shooting are those with a top strap.
Remington, Rogers&Spencer, Whitney.

Colt, Manhattan and so on are mostly sold for collecting.

Right now he pays SEK 8,20 per USD.

But when did this change ?

Several years ago, you were lucky you firearms shipment got through. One day you luck will change and your firearms (modern or antique will be seized).

I received an email this afternoon from Sam Denner---John's wife.
I have known them for a long time and have bought many guns and books from them over many years.

My question;

Hi John, what carrier do you use to ship antique guns from Canada to the U.S. or Europe?

Her response;

"We send antique guns to the U.S. and Europe, (mostly U.K). with FedEx. Excellent service. "

Is this antique in the US, or do they have to be antique up here too. For example. a Winchster Model 1894 made before December 31, 1898 is antique in the US, but not up here. Wonder if Fedex can ship those, or just guns that are antique in both countries.

fed ex in the USA wont ship antiques up here nor will UPS

Hi Dingus, if you are referring to my question, I was wondering about shipping US antique but not Canadian antique (Ex, pre dec 31, 1898 Winchester, antique there, not here) to the US from Canada. Was wondering if Sam Denner`s guns were antique in both countries.
Thanks,

I am not sure on the Winchester question I only ever shipped prescribed antiques.
I have used CP in the last two years to ship prescribed antiques into the USA but as JP says I may have just been lucky to not have had any problems.

I think the key is that true antique guns are nothing more than lumps of steel as far as Canada law and Canada Post are concerned. I would certainly like to hear the definitive last word on the issue and not someone's opinion.
