7.62x54R surplus pulled, powder averaged and new projectile installed, TEST

Pulled measured to be 7.9-7.91mm bullet.That is .311 ball.
I actually see promise in a couple of those groups.
You need to float the barrel with a pressure pad. There are pressure points throwing those groups in circles as the barrel heats.
Most Mosins with good bores should do 2.5moa or better.

Went to range in the weekend.
With my Mexican March rounds (42gr charge, 168gr 30 HPBT). I get a five shots group that has 3 touch holes and 2 touching holes, with about a inch apart. Too bad did n't get the photo.
While the other group, crimped, did not get a good result. I found un-controlled crimp is worse than non-crimp.
As long as the brass holds the bullet, might not have to use the crimp.

Very interesting. I would not have thought a crimp would have made that much of a difference. For storage purposes, you'll need a crimp...no?

The reason I put crimp was because original case has a .311 bullet and once pulled and installed a .308 bullet, it is very loose.
To safely hold the bullet, I crimp it. But as the full crimp is very strong, deforming the bullet, I crimp it lightly, and "controlled by feeling". I might wrong about that but this time crimped group is bad, as bad as the surplus.
Interesting is that my 5 shoots surplus group has three touching holes and two flyer that are about 2 inches away. If I don't have that two additional, I will be amazed by the three touching holes. All depend on luck.

You might want to try the Lee Factory Crimp Die for the 7.62x54 Russian. The Lee dies for the 7.62x54 use a .308 expander with a .311 expander available as an option. I load .308 bullets in my M27 Finn and find that the Lee die set does the job for me.
