Hey all,

I'm currently working on a new load for my 9.3x62 - something intended for a future bison hunt. To this point I've only shot paper with this rifle, so I'm switching bullets to something appropriate for the bison. I've been assuming I'd use the Nosler 286gr Partition, but I'm wondering if the Lapua Mega 285gr would be worth a shot. Anyone have any experience with these, either at the range or on a hunt?

Cheers!

not that hard of an animal to take down some may think but not a big deal buddy has a bison ranch north of fort saint john shoot. level with the ear 2-3 inches back from ear, he uses a 270, if you hit the g or should i say sweet spot the animal will flop over on its side and its back leg pop up like a big boner!! its a site to behold. i shot mine with a 7mm rem mag did the ban flop had to laugh! enjoy good luck!!!

Killing a bison on a ranch and hunting bison in the wild are two different things. Most hunters don't use a precise spot on the head as a aiming point while hunting.

As for the OPs question the Lapua Mega, I've never shot an animal with them but they did do very well on my .264 bullet test.

bcsteve, I appreciate your input. I completely forgot you tested this bullet in your .264 test. It does look like an effective option, especially as I will never aim at an animal's head...

I think I might give them a try. I'll see what I can cook up for a range recipe, and if my rifle likes them hopefully I can fill a freezer (or two!) with some bison too.

If anyone else has tried them, I'm happy to hear about it.

Cheers!

FWIW, I was told to use Lapua Megas for hunting by a 40 year veteran hunter who used to be an African guide for 11 years. (before they were all outed by the locals).
I shoot the lapua mega 155gr .264s with my 6.5x55 tikka with excellent accuracy at 100-200M, and probably picked them up in part due to bcsteve's post too.
I have been told by a friend who shot a deer two years ago with a 155gr mega, it was a large wound channel and the animal dropped immediately.

OP.........May I suggest you might wish to consider Matrix Ballistics bullets. I have had super success with them and Ted (Why Not?) on here has taken more game with the 9.3X62 than any other man on here (and likely all of NA) and he recommends them highly. Just a thought, but I took a good sized grizzly at point blank range (inside 30 mtrs) using a 270 gn Matrix spritzer RBT bullet and I recovered the bullet, which had expanded larger than a tooney and still weighed 258 gns all washed up. This was from a 9.3X300 WM with an impact velocity north of 3000 fps........Believe me you just can't get better performance than that..........AND......these bullets are available everyday at the tip of your fingers, just a phone call away. This availability is as important to me as any other factor when choosing a bullet.....man I hate working up a load only to have my favorite bullet disappear from the shelves and start hearing 2 year delivery for more............
Marshal at Matrix is a great guy to deal with and gets his bullets out to you within hours of your order. In his 9.3 selection I use a 270 gn spritzer RBT but he has several weights and shapes I'm sure you can find one that suits your needs. I found I preferred the 270 in the X62 as velocity is down and the 270 Speer HC worked quite well at these velocities but the Matrix works better......I believe there is plenty of penetration with 270s in this cartridge so I prefer a bit more velocity and slightly flatter trajectory...........just my preferences.

Yep, give him a call at 604-814-5091, order a box of 270 or 290 gr Bonded Cores, and you'll be in business! They are amazingly accurate, and typically retain 90% original weight

i like Lapua product but on that one if you need the same bullet have a look at the PRVI ones. of course the Matrix are on another league.

I've shot Mega in 264" 155gr in a 260 Rem, and 308" 200gr in both a 308 Win Ruger GSR and a Ruger no1 300wm. In all 3 rifles they group very well

I have used the 185 gr Mega in the 30-06 at the range and the accuracy is ok but nothing like the Nosler bullets I normally use. It has a poor BC but for short range hunting that wouldn't matter. I found a comparison with Nosler Partitions done by someone on the net and the Mega didn't open up as quick as the Partition and gave slightly more penetration which should be good for the Bison, but you can't go wrong with the tried and true Partition.

My cousin in BC shot a Bison with a 338 (rem factory load) behind the shoulder and it ran 1/4 mile with the herd before dropping. Another guy shot a big nasty bull in a pasture that was causing havoc with the other bulls and was wrecking fences. He shot it somewhere in the head with a 30-06 and it ran about 50 yards and stood there and shook it's head a bit. Now it may have been a bad shot it was hard to tell afterwards. I'm not a fan of head shots myself but this was like butchering a steer. He got closer for the next shot and this time a head shot brought it down.
