Hi there......got this colt rail gun and looking to trade it away......the interested party sais the idiot mark drastically reduces the value on this pistol......I know these are 1750$ new......what a fair trade or cash value on this pistol with the idiot mark.....how much does this decrease the value? What is a fair asking price for trade value or a decent asking price on EE for cash sale? Thx

That's a pretty harsh mark unfortunately. I'll admit that they bother me, although the gun doesn't shoot any differently and if you want to post beauty pix of the pistol you can 'shop it out, so maybe it's just a "pride of ownership" thing. Resale value takes a hit for sure. The front of the grip looks a little scuffed, too--what's the overall condition? (or is that just reflections?). Looking at what I see there with some wear on the trigger and slide and the scratch I'd think maybe $1400ish?

The reduction in value caused by the idiot mark will depend on the potential buyer. Some just want a shooter and don't care. Some won't want it at all particularly if it is a trade offer.

You'll probably get more if you sell it than trade it, unless the guy taking it on trade really wants that particular model - does not sound like your situation.

The gun has clearly seen some use and it has a pretty big gouge. I'm thinking 1k-$1200 max.

When I purchase a used item I start at 80% new minus replacement of damaged parts minus a percentage or more for cosmetic appeal plus or minus a percentage or two for how bad I want it. In this case -5% for scratch and -5% for picitiny rail.

(1750)(.8-0-.05-.05)= $1225 minus the cost to bead blast the scratch out ~$150, make it roughly $1075. But I'm sorry, I can't make you that offer.

But that's for me, everyone will have a different comfort level, and the EE is nuts for prices all over the mark.

I know firearms are tools which are meant to be used, and some of my toys are really beaten to crap.......yet when it comes to the idiot/noob scratch on 1911s it really, REALLY bothers me, lol!

Everyone is different, so please take this with a grain of salt, but it would probably take me a $1,000 asking price for me to ignore the idiot scratch.

I agree that it's going to be a personal decision...for me, doesn't bother me at all but I'd probably pretend it did to get your price down.

Incorrect technique used to re-insert the slide stop when reassembling the pistol.

Yup, it's not really nice to refer to it as the idiot scratch, as it does happen very easily if you haven't been shown a good technique to reinsert it. Once you've figured out a good way to do it though, it's easy to prevent.
