Not in a hurry to make a purchase just yet (as I still have my restricted course) but I'm learning towards shot guns for versatility. I've heard for price of ammo sake the best bet is 2 3/4" what say you fine folks? I'm mostly interested in trap shooting I think.

How much time does one tend to spend at the range? How much ammo per hour do you go through?

Cheers!

Target loads by the case can be found for 30 cents a shot or so. Buckshot and slugs run $1 and up. Comparable to 9mm really.

I found vintage shells for around 20 cents a round and newer Remington buck shot and slugs for 60 cents a cartridge, but it took patience and always checking private sales on this site . Best deal I've found on target shot , 7.5,8, and 9 shot is 75-83$ a case of 250 and that's on sale at cabelas or in person at Leberon

If you are looking to shoot trap or skeet then buying target load shells by the flat is your best bet. In the Hamilton area the best place to go is either Hummason's or Lawry Shooting Sports.

Hummason is a challenger and Winchester distributor and Lawrys has federal and others.

I'm glad bulk is an option!

Shot guns are addictive and extremely versatile, not a bad place to start at all. Cost are going up like everything else for ammo, but very affordable still an for the foreseeable future. You can still plink with a shotgun =)

Sporting clays at our club (Nova Sporting Clays) cost 20 dollars a round which requires a minimum of 50 rounds or two box's of target loads. I say minimum, because we follow the new rules about allowing the gun fully loaded(two rounds) on a single, and there are sometimes "no birds" that get shot at too. I usually shoot two rounds,so that's 100 shells, plus 40 bucks for trap fees. Its currently 125 a year for membership. We are paying about 70/flat(250) for shells. So that gives you some idea, the clubs open on Thursday nights and Sundays so you can shoot at 200 targets a week easily. Anything this fun is bound to cost a bit. I have no idea what golf fees are but Ive heard its comparable, but at clays you get to break stuff.

I used to find 9mm cheaper to shoot than 12 gauge, but that's all changed now as long as you stick to target loads. Having said that, shotguns are much more fun or much less fun to shoot depending on how/where you shoot. Busting clays out in the bush is probably the funnest thing to do, but shooting paper targets with bird shot at an indoor range gets boring fast. Still, 12 gauge doesn't seem to have climbed as high as other calibers in price. Even 22 lr isn't as cheap as it used to be and the days of 9mm for 25 cents a round seem to be over.
