Hi. I have a very newbie question.

I learn that AR rifles are "Restricted" in Canada. Is it because most ARs have less than 18.5 inch barrel length?
What if you install longer than 18.5 inch barrel to your AR, can u go hunting with it(meaning that the rifle is considered "Non-Restricted")?

Apologies for perhaps very silly question, however, I do not even own a single firearm yet.

Also, if you could give me answer to this question. I just sent firearm ownership/license application yesterday. How long does it usually take to receive a license?

Thank you

Whoever taught your course should have gone over all that with you. Welcome aboard, and while waiting for your card to show up in the mail, do some research, and ask questions so you can make an informed decision on your first purchase. It sucks to buy a piece of junk for your first firearm and waste money!

All AR platforms and AR compatible variants are restricted be name, same as all AK varients are prohibited by name.

There are however some interesting Non-Restricted Black rifle options but most decent ones are priced $2500 and up.
This is the case. There are several "black rifles" that look ARish to the novice but are not restricted. Cost more than they should though.

Almost all AR-10 and AR-15 variants are Restricted.
I think there may be a Non-R AR-10 variant, but I'm not sure of details. Others can explain further.

If you are currently applying for a PAL, you must have taken the course recently.
Didn't your instructor cover that?

My instructor actually specifically stated that if I rebarreled an AR to 18.6" or longer it would become NR. Seems I am more qualified to teach the course then him after only a couple of years... lol

I saw this gun on Bass Pro shop

Bushmaster rifles. These guns have more than 18.5 inch barrel. I noticed reviews are from US consumers as well that makes it little confusing. Are these rifles Non-Restricted in Canada?

Bass Pro doesn't have a Canadian website so all prices are in USD and not all firearms are Canadian freindly. I wouldn't want to buy from Bass Pro with the exchange rate right now. Lots of great Canadian retailers who can help you find what you need

Damn!! As a newbie, do I have to purchase SKS for my first gun? I would love to buy accurate and cheap rifle similar to AR-15. Type 97 looks great, yet "Made in China" quality is questionable.
