question for S&W 686 4.25" Canadian edition owners

Hi everyone,

I just picked up a used 686 Canadian edition and while I wait for the transfer to go through I've been looking for some different grips and found some nice classic OEM grips that should look sweet. It didn't even occur to me though that they might not fit if my new (to me) shooter is a round butt and these grips are the older square variety. I've googled a bunch but can't find a definitive answer.

So can anyone tell me if their Canadian edition 686 has a round or square butt?

They have had round butts for a while, is it a recent model? Some -4 in 1996 were still square but starting in 1997 all -5 and up should be round. Also some grips are just conversion type, they accept a round butt but look like a square butt (actually looks better IMO)

I guess I'll just have to wait and see, but as these things were only introduced in 2011 best I can tell I'm now operating under the assumption that it will be a round butt.

I've been looking into conversion grips but none of them seem to have the classic look or else they cost dang near as much as another gun. One site referred to how they modified the classic look for their grips to accommodate people who can't "palm a basketball." I however CAN palm a basketball and that's what I love about the classic grips, and I've yet to meet a fingergroove grip that fit my mutant hands/fingers properly.

Sigh...in the meantime here's a photo I found on the interwebs of what I hope I can eventually pull off. Thanks again all!

Herrett's (herrettstocks.com) makes stocks to order based on your hand tracing. The Jordan Trooper style should work well for large hands and is available without finger grooves. The Custom Shooting Star looks a little more like a regular S&W Target grip.

This is my K-38 with the Herrett Roper stocks:

+1 Love that look.
 
They're not the ###iest of grips but nothing I've handled feels as nice in the hand as the round to square conversion Hogue monogrips for the K/L frame Smith and Wessons.
 
Well, for the benefit of anyone following the thread or people searching it in the future, my 686 is indeed a round butt. I've found some decent looking conversion grips on both ebay and amazon that are in my price range, but opted to go with an old pair of square butt grips I bought for a dollar (really!) for the time being until I decide if I want to invest more money in this gun. The grips leave a bit of a gap, but they're good enough for the time being. Happy shooting everyone!
