NIB Tikka T3 bolt face erosion?

Just purchased a new Tikka T3 Lite stainless steel 7mm Rem. Mag. Was cleaning up the bolt and bore and discovered erosion marks on the bolt face. Look like burst primer gas burns - or possible tool marks. Rifle has not be fired yet (except obviously the test shots at Tikka). Anyone else noticed this on a new Tikka bolt?



 
looks like a piece of the carbide broke during the manufacture process. send the pics in for warranty. keep us up to day on how you make out. I am sure there's a few of us here who will choose are next firearm based on customer service and warranty. good luck.
 
That looks more like busted primer gas erosion than damage from a broken tooling bit. Maybe a few of the proof test rounds at the factory were a little hot.

I had that on a Ruger once, granted it had a few rounds through it by that time

 
Contacted Stoeger Canada and forwarded pictures. They have authorized replacement of rifle. They agree likely cause is burst primer during factory test firing. They were very good to deal with and very prompt in responding to my query.

Had a nice scorched ring in a brand new Ruger American...loose primer pockets on proof loads would be my guess. The little pin hole pits look more like what happens with faulty Winchester primers.

Tikka fires super hot loads to safety check the action (a good thing!). So this is a possibility. But I would contact the seller or the Canadian distributor (Stoeger?) and get the bolt replaced. Hopefully you didn't fire it... I don't know if the bolt is machined to the action so it may mean a new rifle!

Fair. Just wondering if it there is any risks or consequences when using a bolt in this or similar condition? I have a similar mark on the bolt face of my .308, but it has seen near 1,000 rounds at this point. I just attributed it to wear and tear.

That is excellent to hear. Seems you reached a suitable solution rather quickly and without any fuss or expense to you!
 
My hunting bud has a T3 in .300WSM with the same pitting due to a sh$tty lot pf WLR primers that got handloaded.
This particular rifle is very accurate and after plenty of rounds since the defective Winchester primers were long since in the garbage shows no ill-effects due to the erosion/pitting.
