You might luck out and find a used Ruger for the same price as the Remington, but all of those cost more than the Remmy. The DIY option costs virtually nothing, and OP stated he wants to upgrade the stock later anyway, so that's one issue that won't exist long term.

I look at it this way..... A Rem 700 SPS at cabelas is $700 plus tax.... Then add $200 for a checkered Boyd's stock and the cost of Cerakote, so $200 someone else does the coating or $50 for supplies if you do it yourself....

So you are looking at $950 - $1100 plus tax..... There are a lot of good rifles you can buy in that price range that don't need any modification at all out of the box.....
 
I hear ya SB but the up side is that one needn't spend all the money at once, as the SPS is usable as she comes and one can then budget upgrades as money becomes available. At least with the SPS you are starting with a 700 barreled action, so it's not really like putting lipstick on a pig...........It's more like taking a plain jane grubby country girl and washing her up, give her a nice hair style and a good make up kit and some spiffy clothes and hey, she is actually pretty enough you want to date her. The same cannot be said of Ruger Americans, or Zastavas, or Salvages in my opinion.........you just don't have the raw beauty to start with and in their case, it truly is lipstick on pigs............
