Is there a "THE" AR-15 out there if not building one?

If a guy were to go out and buy a built AR, is there a "THE" one to buy? Say a guy was gonna spend 3K. Should he look at an original Colt, or are there better options out there for that price? Short barrel and short fore stock.

And, I'm new to this, so please don't treat me like I'm a retard. :)

Really, it comes down to what you actually want to do with the rifle. The AR platform comes in so many different flavors, the sky is the limit with them. If you want that military cool factor, the colt SA 20 is a great way to go, but if you are looking to target shoot, there are tons of precision built AR15's that are made to match grade specs for accuracy. You'll probably be spending more than $3000 for one of those though. Think about what it is you want to get from the rifle, because there are a number of options available.

Because of the fact that I'll really only be able to use it at the range, and there's zero chance that I could ever be a competitive shooter. It's mostly about looks and fun. Less about crazy unreal accuracy.

Scopebite asked the key question. "Better" in terms of AR can go in many different directions. If you don't care about ultimate accuracy, how about durability, ergonomics, weight? If it's all about looks then you'll have to decide what looks good to you...it may not end up being that expensive unless you're also interested in blingy brands.

i don't think there are any good answers to your question without more specificity.

p.s. You don't have to be competitive to have fun in competitions. You should try it, you never know...
 
How about 'Versatile?' The Colt IUR. and SA Family fit that bill (15.7)

Dan Defence as well.

Noveske, HK, Ruger.... all make a versatile AR. If DMR is your thing, you may want a 20" or longer barrel. CQB? 10" is a lot of fun. 3 Gun?-DCRA? 15.7-18 imho
 
I was in a similar position when I got my rpal, did research and went for a Daniel Defense. Key factors were reliability researched via forums and videos, aesthetics and that they provide tools for the US military.

I'm not saying there aren't other manufacturers that fall into the same categories (IE. Colt/Diemaco) but DD was there and accessible when I was in the market to buy. I am very happy with my v11.

Here's the deal. Get either a Daniel Defense or a Colt Canada IUR. Get whatever barrel length that floats your boat ( bearing in mind that if the gun goes to the US, it must be at least 16"long including a pinned flash suppressor or brake).
Get an Aimpoint RDS ( PRO, H1, T1/2), an angled foregrip (AFG), a good single/ dual point sling, good pistol grip ( Magpul or Hogue or others) and a good buttstock. Have a place to stick a nice WML ( Weapon Mounted Light). Finally, get a Geisselle trigger pack.
Things like BAD levers and ambi safeties are personal choice and taste.
The entire package will be under $3000 if you shop wisely. There is nothing more you will need. There will be things you WANT but not NEED.

I'm with this, though I'm an EoTech guy myself. CC has ambi controls already, so you don't need to lay out on that if you go that way. The furniture on the CC and DD is pretty good, so I don't think you need to fret about upgrading the pistol grip or stock.
 
I've been running my CC IUR complete rifle for 4 months now, 3 matches later. The thing has yet to malfunction about 2k rounds later. The only changes I made was a Geissele automatics hi-speed National match trigger and a raptor charging handle (I shoot left). The stock and grip are fine, feel no need to spend money on replacements.
 
My budget was half that and I still could get into the higher end ARs. I'd love a noveske or colt and ended up going LMT off the EE.

So many choices with ARs.

A $3k budget for an AR (even with an optic) is a healthy budget, happy shopping!
