With my Grampaw's pre 1900's Win 1894 38.55 sitting beside my latest Kimber brush rifle surely made me take stock today..... We have gone a long ways but with a little more practice of the bushcraft stalking skills, that old 38-55 is probably all one needs to hang some game on the pole........ P.S. that damn old 38.55 still held 3.5" at a 100 today with Lazercasts.

One of the remarkable things about firearms is that 100 year old guns can still get the job done. Improvements have been made, but there are few other products that will still work as well today as they did back then, and they can do it with a minimum amount of maintenece. There is something to be aid about fairly simple machinery, built well. :)
 
I'll bet that 100 yr old rifle works a lot better than many of the Almost 100 old eyes do. For that reason I am forced to opt for the technology.
 
I like old guns I like old trucks too.

I have/drive three older trucks a 96 F150 300 in-line 6 engine 200,000 KLM - 99 F250 Super Duty 7.3 turbo diesel 350,000 KLM - 2002 F250 Super Duty 7.3 turbo diesel 100,000 KLM.

Why do I have older trucks because these engines are far better and last longer than any of the new fangled high performance crap out there today.

I can have 3 work crews out without worrying about the trucks breaking down or astronomical repair bills or having payments that I can't afford.

My pre- and post-WWII Mauser 98 based sporters and customs are/were the among the best shooting rifles in my collection. Not a whole lot of refinements in the last 100 or so years, and many of the refinements are for cost-cutting measures!

That certainly is a valid comment.
But I find myself looking at it from the other way, that being the lack of improvement over the last hundred years.

It took only 66 years (1903 to 1969) to go from the very first airplane to landing a man on the moon.
Morse code was state of the art a century ago, now a simple cell phone with internet access can find anything nearly anywhere.
Cameras and photography was a specialty item, now 4K video can be created and shared worldwide instantly.

Yet, when it comes to guns,
-the basic technology is the same
-the velocity is about the same, not much increase
-most types of actions, including semi and full auto, have been around for over 100 years

Just saying...
 
LOL ya I said the same thing the first time I held a Springfield Trap Door...In 1873 they were still using 16 th century style wagon wheels but the quality of workmanship/machining on that late civil war invention ( the Allen conversion was first done on civil war muskets) was incredible.

You might find this hard to believe but last week we had my old Win. Mod. 55 TD 30-30 out to the range and with a Ken Waters load using a Winchester 150 gr. FP over H322 the old girl made a three shot group of 1.87".
Not too shabby for a 91 yr. old rifle with original irons, far better than I anticipated..

I don't find it hard to believe at all, but then I shoot lots of vintage guns with irons!:)
