My current scope had a little accident:

That's kinda sad, but I was looking to upgrade anyways... I'm looking for recommendations with the following specifications:

30mm tube because that's the rings I have
Max scope length is 10.5" due to installation space constraints on the rifle. Shorter is better.
1-6x magnification much preferred, though I'll entertain other ranges.
No illuminated reticle.

Any suggestions while I surf the manufacturer's and merchant's sites?

Thanks.

Ok, looked for a while, found scopes ranging from NCStar at $99, Bushnell at $349, Vortex at $499, Nikon at $899 and above that stuff that's very nice quality and worth way more than the rifle on which it would go. :p

Went for the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24mm. I'm not crazy enthusiastic about the reticle, but I can live with it.

What does the other guy look like?

My backpack, I believe... I'm thinking that having the firearm shoulder slung when I was hiking had the scope bumping against the pack repeatedly. I had noticed a slight wobble in the ocular bell months ago, that I'd attributed to normal manufacturing tolerances: if you put a finger on the top of the scope and pressed down lightly between the ocular and the illumination control turret (where the -0+ is visible), you could feel a small deflection occur.

What seem to have happened is that the aluminum half-tube developed metal fatigue over time. Here's a closeup of where it broke:

So what I've learned from this is to carry a little differently while hiking. I now use a modified African carry where the rifle is tucked under the arm almost vertically, barrel down, scope to the front, held in place by the arm on that side. That probably wouldn't work so well with a longer rifle, but for a short Cx4 carbine it's quite comfortable.

Does it not have the Vortex VIP Warranty? http://www.vortexoptics.com/content/vip_warranty

If I thought the scope had a manufacturing defect, I'd be wanting to exchange it under warranty, you're right. :)

In this case, however, I have to take responsibility for abusing the poor thing (I tend to be a little rough on my equipment), so I won't be claiming warranty replacement. Unless someone heard of more scopes of that brand/model (Vortex Crossfire II) failing in the same manner? That would indicate a systematic problem...

Also, I wanted to upgrade the 1-4x to a 1-6x scope anyhow, so I've ordered the Vortex Strike Eagle from Bull's Eye London. :)

Lifetime no questions asked warrenty on that scope.

Use it.

Here us a quote from Vortex

"You see, it doesn't matter how it happened, whose fault it was, or where you purchased it. "

Get it replaced and sell it if you want a different one. Don't just throw it away.

I'd sure be concerned if that was my scope and it did this while doing the shoulder carry.
Send it in and if they replace it with a new one, heck, tawss it in the EE and find
something more appropriate........like a Leupold.

All righty, thanks for the advice: I'll get in touch with them and get myself a spare scope then.

Last time I got a scope, I ended up having to buy a gun to go under it... wonder what I'll get this time? Poor little scopes need a rifle and a purpose! ;)

In the meantime, this is what La Contessa Luigina looks like with the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24.

Played with it at the range yesterday and it worked great. :)

Received a brand new Vortex Crossfire II today. Thanks to all that suggested I should send for warranty replacement whatever the cause of the problem. :)

Of course I now have one more scope than I have rifles... what to do, what to do....
