Everyone should own a .22?

I'm thinking of selling my only rifle, a 10/22 takedown and buying an AR. I will pretty much only be at the range so might as well? The 10/22 would be an awesome survival rifle, good to take camping etc. but if I had to choose just one rifle for the range...I think it should be the AR? The 10/22 is really nice and I like it, but there's something missing. I've heard "everyone should have a .22" multiple times...is that just because of the ammo cost? I have a .22 pistol and I can definitely see the value in training with it, as it takes so many rounds to become proficient. Definitely not selling the pistol. Can anyone convince me not to sell my .22 rifle?

30$ for a brick of ammo vs 10 to 13$ for 20rds. You might sell your take down for what 400 ish. Still need to fork out min 150$ for a used norc. Why not just keep it and put money aside for a AR. Because if you want to shoot 22lr from a AR another 300$ or well buy used kit.

I got plenty of 22s

You have a 22 pistol, so you still have a 22. If you only shoot at the range, an AR would make sense. If SHTF, you'll be happy to have the AR and the 22 pistol makes a fine backup in a survival situation. Practice lots!

I would never be without a .22, likely shoot them more than any other of my guns, they are just easier to grab and go plinking, ammo is easier to carry, cheaper, quieter, fun to shoot.

Well, the first of S. Ontario's heat/humidity has my brain a little cooked (only been cold/crappy since about October, lol) but the first things that came to mind in no particular order;

1. If that 10/22 TD is your first foray into 22 ownership, I don't blame you for feeling tempted to sell. 22s are VERY much worth owning, arguably...moreso than the AR. However, I've owned a 10/22, and have shot a 10/22 TD and I wasn't impressed with either one. Just the opposite. You're either a fan of 10/22s, or you're not. I fall into the category #2.

2. If you have a fire in your belly to get an AR, sell the 10/22....put the proceeds towards the AR...and then start saving for a better 22. CZ is the best combination of quality/price...but you can pay less and still get an accurate 22 that will last a long time. (Marlin XT, Ruger American, Savage) You can pay allot more too of course.

3. 22s at the range~I can sympathize. As much as I love 22s (I think I'm down to 5) I simply don't enjoy taking them to the range when there are centerfires going off all around me. Not sure why. I love shooting them in the woods, private property (farms I hunt)...even gopher shooting...but an actual range? I just don't, and never have.

So yeah..I feel everyone should have a 22, but if you're only going to have one...make it a decent one, ideally, an accurate bolt gun. "Accurate" is a relative term, as I don't own anything with a price tag higher than a CZ452 Varmint. However, I just started saving for an Anschutz. By 2018, I may have one. lol

So... a 10/22, a 22pistol and an AR. That would be Ok for a little while. But you really should have a good center fire revolver. Maybe a single action too....but of course a 22 revolver is important.....oh and a center fire pistol..9mm is probably about right............ but then there is the 9 vs 45 thing....gotta find the answer to that one......oh ! and a nice bolt rifle.........levers...semis, falling blocksssss......

Keep the 10/22 and the pistol. Save a little longer. Get a nice AR............. no regrets. You will find uses for all of them at one stage or another :)

This thread is making me sick.
Presently I have a Mauser ES350B at the gunsmith getting retrofitted with a walnut version of a McMillan A5 adjustable stock.
Going to top it off with a 22 rimfire Shepherd scope with the extra auxiliary cross hairs for out to 500 yards.
I know, that's being overly optimistic but whatever.

can't wait to get it to the range & then the gopher fields!!! ;)

KEEP THE 10/22- you WON'T get what you figure it's worth, and forget about the stock value- you'll get maybe 300 for the 10/22 b/c they're common as hell, even with take down configuration- and there's a el cheapo kit to modify a stock 10/22 to a takedown- you'll get what Canadian tire charges for one off the shelf if you're lucky- I have 3 including a choate stocked folder -include a nice scope and you'll be lucky to clear 400- and 2 weeks after you sell it you'll be wishing you had it back again- the world of pricing on USED guns is VERY different than new or what you see them going for- as for the aftermarket stock , best to list it separately or you'll take a bath

Sell it and build an ar style 10/22

Naw ...I want the bang, ballistics, and reliability of 5.56/.223 AR. Looking cool is just a bonus.

I often wonder about carrying restricted in a SHTF scenario. Might attract some attention at the very least?

It's not that I don't like my 10/22....I like everything except for the awful hollow sound of chambering a round. Bleh.

Unfortunately there are no gophers here and it's way easier to get to the range than the closest woods spot.

9mm is definitely on the list. I have a goal for proficiency with my .22 pistol and once I hit that, I'll need a 9mm.

You only have one rifle? I'm amazed you stopped at one. Utterly amazed... I have a few friends ds who managed to stop at 3, I thought that was amazing... I seem to be able to stop at about 10.
