Feed problems with my Winchester '92

I’ve been having problems with the .38 rounds feeding into the chamber of my Winchester ’92. Half the time when I work the lever the next round hangs up. I have to work the lever once more to (sometimes) clear the action and insert the round into the chamber. Even if the previous round did eject properly the round does not line up for a smooth insertion.

It is a Winchester built by Miroku in Japan. I noticed on the side of the barrel it is stamped with “Model 1892 - - Caliber 357 Mag ONLY” (their capitals not mine). I always thought that meant no .45 .44 etc. Does it also mean no .38?

Your rifle will not shoot .38 unless you reload them to the Length of a .357.......

Some of the cowboy action guys do this so that they can shoot the same ammo in their revolvers and rifles.....

I believe the barrel stamp indicates your problem. A bit like trying to make 22 shorts feed in a repeating rifle marked 22 Long Rifle Only.

Well I just got backfrom the range. The longer 357 (factory ammo) seems to feed better but not perfectly.

I will try loading a bunch of longer rounds to see if the improvement is consistant.

there are many utube videos out there on how to fix stuff on the model 92
loading 38 with a longer cast bullet can help / nose shape can also have a effect

many of the western sites sass will have tips and tricks

there are lots of model 92 clones out there being shot lots with all types of ammo

Maybe your working the lever too fast or with not enough authority all the way open? Far as I always knew anything chambered for 357 mag can shoot 38 special.

I have a Browning 92 in .357. Rounds assembled using .38Sp cases must be .357Mag. length.

The Mirokus don't seem to like the shorter rounds and tend to be quite length sensitive.
For some reason the Rossi guns, I think, will feed .38's.
No idea why the difference.

As per usual - you have have the answer.

First I tried factory loads of .357. Then built my own. It seems to have solved the problem for the most part. Out of about 60 rounds yesterday I had 2 hangups. Maybe I will have to lube them with Vaseline )

This has been the secret problem for very many of rifles in the 38/357 caliber (Model 92) design for a number of years now.
Note that the Marlin 1894 carbine in 357, does not suffer from these same feeding issues as many Winchesters or the Winchester inspired copies.
