I can't seem to find it here in CGN, but I do recall reading a thread and seeing a picture where the receiver rail ends were mushroomed. The conclusions where a poor heat treatment. I remember that I even went to check my own rail status to see if I could spot any indication of a soft receiver in mine. The image was similar to the one found in this thread, but the rail ends where noticeable more deformed.

On the same note, while browsing CGN Red Rifles forum for the thread, it seemed to me that there were many more non-gremlin problem threads for CSA than for CZ.

I remember that thread. Apparently the speculation was that the rifle had been sent out to some company for some type of aftermarket finish application which required heating the surfaces. The speculation was that this process is what caused the receiver to lose it's heat treat. Hardly the fault of the manufacturer if it's true.

I bought one of the CSA VZ58's made in 2015 and has a chromed barrel. It is the version which has the AR style collapsible stock and also comes right from the factory with a larger pistol grip than the solid butt CSA rifles. All of the CSA VZ58's come with a tabbed carrier now. The chamber on mine needed polishing, as it wasn't done after the chroming process (maybe they forgot??). That was the only issue I had, It has been dead nuts reliable since the polishing.

CZ and Wolverine have had much communication over the past year or so, if anyone followed Wolverine's CZ958 thread you'll know what I mean. That said, I'm darn sure that both Wolverine and CZ knew of the so called "Gremlin" issue. The question that needs answering, is why didn't wolverine ask CZ to tab all of the carriers on their last shipment of 858's.. Better yet, why didn`t CZ just do it! They had to know...

They probably didnt ask CZ to tab all the carrier for the simple reason that it would have driven the price up a couple dollars up, automatically triggering a "#####ing&moaning-a-looza" online.

Am I the only one who thinks it's comedic that a $1200+ gun needs bojacked home fixes to get it work properly?

Not a troll, I'm sure they have their charms but really?

Considering the 58s were sold to dealers for $150 US dollars I'm pretty sure everything could have been fixed and they still made a good profit. You guys simply enjoy being serfs, grateful for everything, however flawed.

100% this. I'm no trying to troll or anything as I use to be an 858 owner myself, the key difference being I bought mine new back in the day for $695 and even then I thought that was a lot of money for what you were getting. It's just crazy to pay a grand plus for this rifle

I did not pay $1200 for mine. Mine is from an earlier batch. Are you guys saying you would be ok paying $1200 for a CSA but not for a CZ? If you're not saying that, what would you recommend as a better, non-restricted alternative at or below said price range? SKS? Type 81?

I owned an 858 a few years ago, at 800 rds it started to dent the reciever where the bolt carrier cams wasnt impressed... sold for a t97 and soon to sell that for a t81

Mini 30 if anything

I guess it was rather Wolverine begging CZ to make 958 and 858 out of leftover surplus components they still keep in a storage. Probably it was not very appropriate to demand for more extras, when CZ already does a favor. CanadIan dealer is a small fish.

It's a perfect market research, as Wolverine did see this hype. I would not complain about the price of a last batch. It's what people willing to pay. And giving the fact it was sold in a few hours, they could mark it up even more.

And OP was right - quite expected this is same CZ 858 with same good ol' issues, nothing to complain about. You wanted it - you have it.

These posts are incredible....it's seems that everone on the last few pages are basically stating the cz 858s are junk WOW!

Mini 30 if anything
But firearm expert Wendy Cukier wrote (pg 9 and 10 of this pdf) that the Ruger mini 14 "is mechanically the same as the US M1 Garand" and that "While the M-16 was designed as a military firearm, Ruger adapted the design to the Ruger Mini-14." I don't know if I'm capable of handling such awesomeness. I'm not worthy.

On a more serious note. I am extremely happy with my CZ858. Of the pieces I own, it is my favorite or 2nd favorite rifle.

From Wolverine :

Sorry for the delays in responding, I will get you the parts so you don’t need to shim anything. Just got to make sure everything is good and I will ship them out to you.

Thanks,
Dave

I'm wondering what parts they will send. Anyone can guess? Tabbed carrier? That's interesting. And now what - anyone who got their 858 can request it ? I can see some folks would do it just in case, even thier 858 is still doing good.

I'm so happy I didn't buy one of these pieces of junk! I bought an sks years ago just because it was a cheap semi auto. I didn't expect anything great from it at the time. I can honestly say that the sks is my favorite semi auto rifle I own. Never had a misfire, jam, or breakdown of any kind. Really easy to take down with no tools. I just love it! I highly recommend sks to any shooter that has never had one. As for them not being very accurate all I can say is I can hit a steel gong at 200 meters with iron sights evey time.

Now prepare to be BBQ'd in this thread.

SKS is and always will be used by 3rd world uneducated, communist or Muslim, canonfodder, and by you! I'd rather have some pride in ownership than having something that just goes boom and you can buy by the truckload. The SKS is a poor man's deer rifle

The CSA was manufactured with new parts, the CZ's were/are parts kit guns from surplus parts bins. I'd always expect the CSA to cost more. I thought the latest batch of CZ were a little overpriced and held off. I'm okay with my decision.

Yeah your right. I should spend more on rifles. Who cares if they don't go boom. The mini 30 doesn't always go boom. Maybe I'll buy that piece of junk. I should get rid of my cheap reliable rifles and buy overpriced ones because I'll look cool at the range and when friends come over.
