Why no Savage 340 love?

Mine, you three options for scopes, one for peep sights. Functional utilitarian rifles.

One advantage over my Marlin Lever is that I can develop a broad variety of loads for it using a variety of bullets as you are not limited to round nosers. Can really improve on accuracy.
Magazines are a bit harder than some to source but are usually available at most Gun Shows and are still being manufactured in the US if you can arrange for legal export to Canada.
I stripped and refinished the stock, looks good.
Last year it was my Son In Law's rifle to use when we went out deer hunting on his novice hunt.

I'll have to remember to strike the Savage 340 off my list of cheap rifles to play around with. Sounds like there are much better choices.
 
I have an old 340B in .22 Hornet ,bought it from my buddy`s grandpops.The gun was barely used but only came with one mag.....bummer (will have too look around for one or two at the gun shows ,but I always forget)

Yah, it`s a little clunky ,but I like it just fine and it shoots not bad with the iron sights.

My grandfather has one which I stand to get one day. He routinely shoots deer with it. Hes started carrying it more in recent years because his Win model 70 is getting a little heavy for him to lug around the bush at his age.

Its not very pretty, but its reasonably accurate and I havent met a deer yet that can take a 3030 to the boiler room and live to tell the story.

Now why would you say that?
Quite a few of us put in a good word for the 340 Savage. They come with the Savage tradition of accuracy, short and light to handle, making them excellent for carrying on quads or trucks, with the great advantage of a removable clip magazine.
Most heard complaint is difficulty in scope mounting, but many of them are factory drilled for a side mount and Weaver makes a good, solid mount for them.
As I pointed out before, prices of them are often good bargains.
 
I saw one for sale locally... I thought I'd grab another since I like mine. But. the store was asking $500. Nutz. I can buy a brand new savage axis with scope for $40 less...and pick my calibre.

Public opinion is fickle,what was the greatest thing since sliced bread has people turning up their noses at the next.Since the lowly( but very effective) 30/30 is now relegated to questionable status to even be able kill a deer( many thousands of freezers filled with venison notwithstanding long before these 'experts' were born) the much touted 'public opinion' demanding bean field accuracy and ballistics to drop a deer at 500 yards...even if they are scarcely capable of shooting one at 100 yards( almost ALL of my deer were shot well UNDER 50 yards-with ONE shot,by a 'bubba'd' milsurp,303 and now 65x55 swede )
As my dad told me 50 years ago when I asked if a certain caliber could kill a deer-he replied,'yes,if you hold it straight'

Fair point and true. Shot deer for years - longest shot was about 75 yards. I think I shoot geese roughly at the same distance as most deer I shoot. I learned to shoot technically in the army many years ago - most people are not accurate at distance unless they practice practice practice with the same gun they will hunt with.

I have friend who is 77 years old. He says that more deer got killed by 30-30 that all the guns put together. Having said that it may be bit of exaggeration but i am sure the number is higher than most can imagine. Same goes for 303 and 6.5x55 on moose and deer. 300 yard shots on deer? Sure but rare in ontario at least.
He tells me this one sometimes...
I killed my first deer shooting it in the hoof. I said hows that possible? He says it was scratching its head.

I had one I like it for deer grate Little hunting rifle (22 hornet )
I wound up giving it to a old First nation elder ( early 80s ) who was having to much trouble packing his 30-06 and needed a smaller Lighter rifle
 
I need to get out more. All under 75 yds...all under 100 yds...wow. Grew up here in the ' Semi-arid desert ' where only 200 yds was an easy shot. Under 100 is shotgun territory ( joking on this statement...sorta)
Personally I would buy a 340 if it came at a deal, I'd think it'd be a thumper at 200 yds. A bit minimalist though...but I'll take my Win 94 into the creek brush for an outing on a regular basis. It's taken a half dozen deer in the last 8-10 years since I've owned it. Probably more than any other in the stable ( now that I ponder it ) & it's a 38-55, lol
