This is the one we are going to move towards. It meets all the criteria and she likes the stock. Now to figure out optics!

Big mistake...

onetwentyish,

(off topic to the OP)

What brand carbon fibre forend is that and did you get it from a dealer in Canada ? Been wanting to get one for my wife's AR.
Thanks.

PRI. ATRS offers it as one of the options for their Modern Hunter and Modern Varminter on the build sheets, but I bet they can order a one to sell separately for you as well.

Care to clarify rather than just throwing out an unsupported opinion? Reviews are good...

I shot that exact rifle in .223 a few weeks ago and it was nice and very accurate. A little on the heavy side but OK for bench work. Just make sure she handles one before you buy as I found the grip a little large and the distance to the trigger a little long for my small hands. Definitely shoot-able but a little large for me.

I also got to try the MVP LR and the MVP LC which was my favorite by far and maybe something to look at.

Some experts on here think they know everything about everything and if they don't like something because they read about it on the internet or got info from some other "reliable source" it's garbage and no one should buy it.

There's also a lot of "brand haters" on here even though their "brand" probably sells some crap also.

Thank you. I am pretty open minded and have learned that good is good regardless of brand. This is true for everything. This rifle meets all the criteria in budget. You having hands on shooting with it means more than "big mistake..."

Mossberg does not have a reputation for building quality rifles....... Maybe that one is better than their previous iterations, but some of the stuff they have churned out over the last 10-15 years is craptacular to say the least...... And that's not brand bias, it's the truth......

I bought a similar rifle, the Mossberg "Patrol" in .223. I bought it because I needed a rifle that used AR15 magazines and was reasonably accurate. It turns out it's quite accurate, and I've only used bulk FMJ, not handloads or quality ammo.

I"m sure the variant you pick will be accurate, too. As elimsprint said, make sure it fits her first. Only issue I have with my rifle is magazine related. SOme mags don't feed as well as others. It's easily solved with a little hand pressure on the bottom of the mag, although a better solution would probably be to only use mag brands that work well.

The Mossberg rifles aren't top shelf, but they do work and are accurate.

All opinions are "unsupported"... they are subjective... but, in fact, I bought that rifle for my son and it was a piece of shyte... abysmal fit/finish, ridiculously sloppy bolt, loose parts and sloppy stock inletting, horrible trigger... I was happy to bring it back for a refund when the store owner looked at it, he agreed that it was a piece of shyte and said it would be the last one he ordered.

I didn't clarify earlier, because you didn't ask for opinions... you sounded like your mind was made up.

So let me get this straight. You went to the store, handled the rifle and either missed all these flaws or ignored them, bought it and then took it back for a refund because of all these flaws where the store owner, who had probably handled the rifle before also, agreed with you and will never order another Mossberg? Really?

Let me guess..... Mossberg fan?

No... I saw it on the internet when it was introduced and read the specs and looked at the pictures and thought; "that would be a nice plinking rifle for my son..." so I ordered it... my first "hands on" was when I opened the box at home... long story short, no more Mossberg rifles for me.

Does that timeline work for you? What sort of empirical supporting evidence would you like for all of these internet "opinions?"

P.S - my son worked at the store for a number of years, and as far as I know, they didn't send another Mossberg "centerfire rifle" across the counter... plenty of shotguns and rimfire rifles though... owners get to make those decisions... and they don't need hassles.

Wrongo, I'm actually a Savage fan if it comes right down to it:) but I carry a TC Contender most of the time. That said most of the Mossbergs I have shot have been OK guns. I did try a Chainsaw once and found it to be quite amusing, useless but amusing, and I have no problem saying so but I don't knock all their products just because I find some rather, shall we say, different. The crappiest gun I ever held or shot was a Remington 700 followed closely by a Kimber that a friend is still dealing with but I don't go around slagging them because of 2 bad examples same as I don't slag Mossberg because of a few strange guns dreamed up by their designers. All the Mossbergs I have handled and shot have been decently made for their price point and have shot reasonably well with some being outstanding, the best being the Varmint in .223, the MVP LC in .223 that I just got to try and an old 4x4 in .270 a friend owns.

If she likes the Mossberg go for it. Its not a mistake to buy an economy gun if she likes it. In 3 or so years if she is ready to trade up, you can sell it to these guys on EE for exactly the price you payed less the taxes. Nothing wrong with that. Heck she might make a hundred bucks on it.
The one I handled was fine

So… We handled the Mossberg today at Canadian tire. Not impressed with the fit of the magazine or the bold action feel. It was disappointing because the stock has a nice feel to it. The guy at Canadian tire directed us to The Ruger predator. It has a semi-heavy barrel which is threaded already and it had the right throw on the stock for her. The salesman had a friend who has the Ruger and they were hitting gongs past 500. She would rather get something that has quality then she can change the stock later on. Too bad about the Mossberg…
