S&W 745 (IPSC)? Anyone got one?

Would love to hear from any owners of this gun.
The 745 was a limited run .45 SA pistol that evolved from the 645 made famous by Sonny Crockett in Miami Vice ( after he ran out of Bren Ten mags!)
Gun came out around 1990.
There was a IPSC Commerative edition and a short production regular edition.
It's a two tone single action semi auto with wood grips ( the 645 had plastic ones).
I've been looking for comments and the EE for this gun for a while but nothing ever shows up.
Anyone have one? And how does it shoot? Is the SA trigger similar to the M52?

Don't know much about them either but looks like a nice gun for sure. Like those older gen Smith autos.
 
I had a 645 that had work done to it. Great pistol, best .45 I've ever owned.

Sadly no. Like you, I have not seen them pop up. I've seen a several 645 and a couple 945s listed over the past few years, but not a 745.

and ^^^^ nice 645.
 
I don't know if you guys can tell, but it was a big ass gun. Felt really good in my large hands, recoil was gobbled up by the sheer mass of it... now I'm wondering why I sold it. Someone spent some cash on it as the trigger was so soft, there was a large plastic bag with tons of parts, springs/trigger parts/tons of mags. Only negative was the red ramp in the front was missing. Maybe the previous owner took it out.

That is what I gather - very strong well built guns. And I think we can all relate to sellers remorse...
 
I sold mine a few years back. It was a pretty pistol, I used to show all my friends who went shooting with me that masterpiece. It had shiny sections and brushed sections, it just screamed 'well made'. It had wood grips as well, that said 745 on them. I put them on but the rubber grips were more comfortable.

It was made when S&W quality control was excellent. I've seen some threads on the new revolvers with some obvious QC problems.

I should have kept it, it probably commands a better price now than what I paid for it or what I sold it for.

Always enjoyed shooting it. Bought it because I thought it would be the nearest I'd get to a 645. Only issue I had was a weak extraction spring. Polished the ramp.

Ironic you bought the rarer gun to get near the more common one! My only concern is that it has very sharp lines and corners, like the hammer and the rear sight. Congrats on owning a very nice piece!
 
Had one - not with the IPSC rollmark but a 745 nonetheless. Nice gun but ultimately not as 'good' as a 1911. It just didnt' fit as well and the safety actuation takes more thought than the 1911. Of course now with the parts available for the 1911 the gap is even larger. Still, nice, accurate, well built pistol.
 
I use to have a 645, local dealer burned me. He was supposed to sell it and take 10%. I had taken a couple of cheap items towards what he would owe me after the sale, after he refused to tell me how much he'd sold it for, said I'd traded him for the junk...putz. He got put out of business by the Police if I'm not mistaken...and had his house repossessed by the look of it, couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
 
Have experience with 2nd and 3rd gen S&W pistols in 9mm, 10mm and of course, .45 (645, 4506, 4566...etc) but none with the 745. Very sturdy pistols in both .45 and 10mm, big, heavy slides and frames made to withstand full power factory and reloaded ammo and even more (.460 Rowland). Very accurate too.

But, as tgt40 wrote, ergonomics suffered when compared to the 1911 platform (safety location, grip angle and size, trigger could also be better, DA is very heavy even when work was done on it). I always shot my 1911's better, same with about 99% of shooters who shot both platforms extensively.

But again, maybe the 745 is in another league compared to the other 2nd gen S&W pistols.
