Cut or compress for foam in black gun cases?

As others have mentioned it really depends on how much you modify or change guns if it is worth it. I cut a bunch of foam a number of years ago for my pelican cases but as I have modified the rifles and changed pistols it isn't super effective now. Getting new foam is a bit pricey. If I had to do it again I would just get compressed foam for the flexibility. At least for my rifle case.

I think the idea of having and empty pelican case and tossing a soft of similar size inside, is probably the best solution. Use the soft case for range trips/non restricted. Use the soft in conjunction with the pelican for when you anticipate your guns might get a rough ride or if you are bringing the restricted guns to the range and want the extra security.

I have a nice 5.11 double rifle bag that I think I will set up with my pelican 1720 and run them together for a bit to try it out.

For the price of the rifle... Foam is cheap.

I always cut. I used to compress until I scratched the hell out of a rifle.

Nothing protects as well as a propperly cut case.
