Haida Gwaii !
I ordered a skin on frame canoe kit from dreamcatcher canoe it comes with a DVD and everything needed for two canoes exept the wood
I'm planing a Haida Gwaii Roosevelt Elk hunt wear I will be hunting it floods at high tide but theres logs and other Obstacles to get over
I know I will have to de-bone a elk in order to pack it out in the canoe
It will also be used trapping and under 35lb I just can't help my salf haha
My plan is to use Alaskan mill and make the frames out of sitka spruce
As nice as the canoe looks in white I will go with a flat black paint after all it's going to be my new hunting canoe
Just wondering if any of you have made a skin on frame canoe for hunting?

What kind of dope/ sealer do you use? Ultra light/ ultra fragile. Great project the wood joint's how are they joined? Tacked, screws, boot lace ,para cord or leather teathered. Rounded bottom? Sits high in the water gonna take some skill not to flip it but it's gonna be great on mirror / calmer waters ,it's going to be a real glider silent.

Funny, I never saw one at the mouth of the Coppermine or Mackenzie Rivers but I have seen a ####load of Old Towns.

Nor did I see one on the Snake River as it would have only lasted 50 ft. at best. An interesting craft for sure, but it may not be as durable for your purposes as what they have led you to believe. I do wish you all the best with this experiment.

Kit has the nylon skin and a few screws, zip ties ,tacks and some of the lashing needed. Plus the DVD. $297 to $347 for the kit. You can just get the DVD and source everything at home from CT or a good hardware store.

I am thinking of making the canoe a foot longer and adding 2" on the gunwels
Plus I have a trick that we used herring fishing to pack more fish

Skin on frames are pretty tough. My cousin made his own kayak similar to this pic, I think that a DIY would be the way to go personally. Source your own plans and your own stuff. They worked pretty well for these guys for over 4000 years. I wonder how many times he didn't go hunting because he didn't have a fibreglass canoe and the latest and greatest gear?.

An old town doesn't require you build it. Doesn't mean traditional methods don't work. Isnt the Copper mine river and Mackenzie river the exact areas this style of boat originated??? 100 years ago that's all you would have seen.

And they still use them rather than the newer modern materials, right? Or did they abandon the old methods just as soon as they could, once better materials became available. There is no doubt that a kevlar canoe that weighs little more is vastly more durable, with better and more "seaworthy" shapes as well.

They used that technology because it was all they had, and their ingenuity and clever designs made them work, but no one has ever suggested they were superior to modern "latest and greatest" gear. It may well be possible to get the kit canoe to work. But it is NOT really a suitable craft for the purposes intended, any more than it would be a good idea to use the stone and bone knives they used rather than a modern knife.

Possible does not mean smart or safe.

If it has a DVD, though, it must really be something.

And dying by age 45 as a matter of commonplace worked better too?

If I Remember Ash is used for the ribs of a cedar canvas canoe

I built one using Red Cedar BTW

best length is 15-6 to 16 ft for a canoe

shorter and they can't carry anthing and longer they get to big and heavy

Id buy new stuff too, still doesn't mean it doesn't work. Get the theme here, Milling his own logs, building his own boat, you know doing something with your own hands instead of just buying a regular boat the same as anyone else. I also see it as kinda the same reason lots of people bow hunt, use traditional muzzle loaders, spear fish/ hunt, use dog sleds etc etc. My grand father used to build great big wooden boats, heavy as hell and defiantly like not as nice as a new Lund or what have you but it he built it and fished the hell out of em and that's what it was all about for him. People are into doing things the old ways and honestly thank #### the world isn't full of people soo willing too toss away traditional methods of doing things. Like I said too, forgo the dvd kit and build his own. I agree that particular one seems a bit dainty picturing it full of meat and gear. How is an umiak less than "seaworthy"? Have you ever seen one?
