Budgetish scope for LDish shooting.

Hello all.
Looking for a scope recommendation.
Just moved into full bore shooting and faced with a budget.
Picked up a heavy barrel .308 with a Bushnell Banner and find my sight picture on the lousy side.
Will be shooting 100 yards and moving up to 300 yards ( not sure if anything past that in the next few years).
Plan on shooting year round, so will have to acceptable in all weather.
Here's the catch.... After the rifle and ammo..... Not much left for a better scope.
In your opinions, is there anything decent I can get around $400????
If so, what are you recommendations .

Find a straight power scope you are not going to get much for 400, a used swss, I like my bushnell 10x have made it out a ways with it.
 
I was pretty impressed with my burris c4, bought it for long distance rimfire fun and liked it enough I bought a second for my 270....they were right around the 400 mark
 
mueller 8-32x44 for 325.oo from amazon.ca the reviews show it standing up to a 308 quite well. I looked through one and for what it is and what it costs you really can't go wrong
 
Just some food for thought on optical sights ... "Palma" shooters frequently manage the "X" ring at 1000yds -- which is 10" in diameter -- with IRON sights. Imagine what they could do with 6x scope?

the black ring around that 10" center is 5 feet round

Yes...isnt it amazing if all they can resolve is a 5ft black ring and they can still hold (off their elbows and with wind, mirage etc etc) 10"!

Imagine now with that 6x scope - that 5ft target would look like it is sitting at 167yds (rather than a 1000yds) to our shooter....imagine what he can resolve...and likely hold into.

you have no idea how much magnification they have on their diopter sights, and if a 6 power scope makes a target at 1000 yards appear to be sitting at only 167 yards I have obviously been wasting money on sightron 10-50's and nightforce 15-55 scopes in order to shoot 600 and beyond. The rule of thumb is to buy as much magnification as you can afford and then dial back to the magnification that you need, it's always better to have to much then to be pissed you don't have enough.

Some shooters using iron sights use NO magnification..although they may use an adjustable aperture to improve depth of field....as you know, a 6x brings the viewed object 6 times closer...7x = 7 times closer etc etc ...thats the way it works. You are welcome to use what ever magnification suits you. And some people benefit from as much power as they can acquire. Some people find even with a variable with a high magnification they do not use all the power and would have been happy with a fixed 32 for the longest F class ranges they shoot. A dozen years ago a guy or gal could even be pretty competitive with a SS 20x. Maybe even today.

Regardless of what they see or aim at...I am still VERY impressed with the women and men who can lie down and supported only by their elbows - using iron sights - repeatedly put rounds into a 10" circle at 1000yds!
