As for that sling screw hole, it may very well be an experimental attachment system.

It has appeared on quite a few k98's.

I sent you a photo of what the rifle looks like with the little piece that is supposed to screw in that hole.

Unfortunately no records that exist can prove this, it's just speculation. Still, worth considering as an explanation.
 
LOL. 6 vs 20 on this one.....and this is not as extreme as it gets.
Could have the front site, Buttplate, action screws, and band spring numbered if earlier. And cleaning if even earlier.

Haha yeah I learned that with the "243" 1939, I just kept finding serial number everywhere.

Especially helps get "the look" after a reblue. Hahahah and yes that's Steve1987 and me. We dress like that on weekends. ;)
