hey guys, just bought and converted an SKS to black tactical stock
whats best way to mount a scope on it and what type of scope would be best? i understand you can buy a new piece that comes with scope mount on it or what , just drill and tap by a gunsmith?
i intend to use it mostly for target practice but maybe some hunting

with good optics what distances are feasible at the range?
what distance is still kill worthy for whitetail deer hunting?

I have Magwedge, Wartak and Matador rails on my SKS rifles. They all look similar ad all function very well, although Magwedge has a new one that allows stripper clips I think. Eassy to install and no drill tap required. They work as shell deflectors too.

Westrifle sells an SKS sidemount that will let you either mount a cantilevered rail, or traditional Russian/Eastern European optics from and SVD base like a POSP. I've seen photos of rifles that have been modified to take reproduction M91/30 side mounts for the PU scope, and it looks pretty slick, however it requires the stock to the trimmed around where the mount fits. The side mounts offer the most solid base for optics, but they do require gunsmithing.

Generally though the SKS isn't a very accurate rifle, and isn't a good rifle for mounting optics for both mechanical and ergonomic reasons. Even with optics I don't think it's a practical rifle for target shooting beyond 300m.

I've had good results with the Choate mount - although that requires drilling the receiver.

(yes this one is on the left side, but that's another story!)

The rails which Gatehouse mentions do work well indeed. No drilling, easy to install, and allow longer optics without damaging them with the ejected shells.

More work, but the mounts which go on the side of the receiver and work with a removable base (mentioned by lonesalamander) are cool! (and they work well)

The SKS is probably my most favored rifle but I have to agree with this. If you're expecting to do any more than quick shooting, gongs and bush shots at shorter ranges , then bypass the SKS and get a rifle with your hard earned money that can get some accuracy.

You can put paint and flowers on a sh*t house, but at the end of the day its still nothing more than a sh*t house.

I didnt figure it would be a great rifle for either target or hunting, its just so cheap to buy and shoot that i figured i would buy one just in case the effing liberals make them restricted or banned in near future in which case i hope to be grandfathered in or at least hold off as long as possible before turning it in to an aunthority[authoritarian rcmp or fedrul gubmint]

i think i like this top one as it seems it would still allow the iron sites to be used?
i might just go with a red dot type site

Gotta LOVE SKS's. You can do soo many things with them. Sorry OP I have Never put a scope on any one Ive owned. Decent to 200 meter Gong is all I know with irons, & I think thats good enough for now, would like to try longer distance when I can. Everyone should have 5 of them! ;) Even in plain stock config. is still very niice! I really like the Thumb hole stock, saw one on EE recently, was it yours by chance? Is it easy to get front site off for something like the one in Dragonuv type black stock? I like the look of that one too.

my front iron site has a "1" stamped on it

is there any truth to the lower the number from 4 down to 1 on the front iron sight the better quality rifle you got and probly more accurate?

+1 on this ^^^
Yet, as versatile as SKS may be one needs to know its limitations and not expect sniper rifle performance (with or without optics). It is simply not meant to be one. The military doctrine changed after WW1 as all parties realized that there is no need to make rifles accurate beyond 300 yards as most combat encounters do not exceed this distance. Probably this covers 95% hunting situations as well. And SKS is sufficiently accurate up to 300 yrds.

The drill tap mounts are definitely the most robust option if you willing to perform the gunsmithing to install them,... But I have also had decent performance out of the rear sight/ receiver pin rails like wartak etc.

As for drill tap mounts, ID only recommend the Russian side mount rail IF you REALLY want to use Russian styled side mount scopes..... They are expensive, but cool.
