Sa-08 bolt not closing

Shoot it "wet" with clp as "grouse man" says, savvy Remington 1100 shooters have been doing this for years!!!!

Score brand shells. I have also tried federal and Winchester with very similar results. I have used the heavy piston but for not more then a few rounds at a time, and only with heavier loads.
Try the heavy piston and see if it will reliably cycle the gun with the target loads . it may be possible that the light piston is allowing excessive amounts of gas and carbon into the gas system .
This is from the weatherby sa08 manual . ASSEMBLY OF PISTON TO MAGAZINE TUBE
Note: The Weatherby® semi-auto shotgun comes with 2 pistons. By having the two different pistons the operator can switch between heavy load and light load ammunition, allowing the action to cycle correctly with different ammunition. To determine the best piston for the ammunition, it is recommended to use the heavy load piston first, and if there is a problem with the gun cycling correctly change to the light load piston.
1. Place the piston into the magazine tube by sliding the piston over the forward end of the magazine tube, making sure the large outside diameter of the piston goes onto the magazine tube first.
CLEANING THE PISTON
1. Using a small lint-free cloth and clean tooth brush, clean the inside and outside of the piston with gun- cleaning solvent; and dry thoroughly with a clean cloth.
2. With a clean cloth or patch, apply a light coat of gun lubricant to all accessible surfaces of the piston.

as you can read above they say to only use the light piston if the gun will not cycle reliably with the heavy piston .

.

Just tried the heavy piston. It will not cycle target loads. I tried 4 different size target loads. Headed to town right away to get some CLP.

G96 really good stuff .it is what I use on all my guns . it has a very wide temperature range .works in extreme cold and does not bake on to the mag tube .put a light coat on the inside of your piston and the outside of the mag tube .

Have you thought of the recoil spring ?
The one that pushes the receiver back...you mentioned unknown round count .
Having cleaned the gun from the front end it maybe time to start looking at the other areas.
See page 5 of the Pdf file and the part #3.
Then go to Pdf page 8 ...
There are only so many things that can be wrong with it and you have covered most .

Thought of it. Had it apart and clean/inspected it. Not broke but may be weak due to unknown round count. Can not find one in stock At a few places I called. Will call around more Monday and order one up even if I gotta wait for it to cross the border

And you've cleaned the INSIDE of the gas cylinder, correct?

Yes, G96 is equally good.

Yes I have cleaned in the cyl. The only thing I haven't had apart is the piston itself as I did not want to wreck it if it wasn't supposed to seperate, as the manual doesn't show it as more then one piece. Just looks to me that you can take the ring out and pull the piston into 2 pieces.

Great News... Shot 90 rounds today without a hiccup!! Cleaned piston & mag tube with carb cleaner. Lubed with G96 Gun Treatment Friday night. Didn't touch it Sat. Then Shot it wet today, as the G96 does not fully dry. All good. Looked a little dirty in there but it cycled and closed properly the whole time. Sorry didn't take pics of it. I now will order a recoil spring and possibly a piston just incase the G96 is a band-aid fix. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!! My son was extremely happy to fire off more then 25 rounds with out problem today

Here you can see the bolt stop has broke on my daughter's shotgun. Had to send it back for warranty work.only been a month .it locked up the action well shooting and had less than 100 rounds threw it.

Interesting. I have two SA-08's, 12 & 20 wood. I will certainly keep this thread in mind. Thanks for posting the trouble and the advice!

I know of 2 people that had bolt problems with the SA-08 that caused a fair bit of damage and had to be sent back to the factory. Another fellow who has one, (a brother to one of the people that had a bolt problem) has had no issues so far. In that case, both were given the guns as gifts at the same time and both have seen the same kind of use.

I have to correct myself. I believe there is a rubber O-ring in that gun, in the cylinder, captured in a groove and very hard to see.

Because it goes over the threads for the magazine end cap each time you remove the barrel, I'm thinking that's really going to accelerate wear on that rubber ring. So for this gun I'll do the majority of the cleaning of the mag tube and piston with the barrel on and let the CLP do the majority of the work.

Correct, that is exactly how the o-ring is positioned. I never thought about accelerated wear from the mag tube threads... That is some good thinking.
