Free Rifle! Rem 660 in 308

I'd love to have a 660 in .308. I think for me, 20" is the minimum tolerable barrel length. The 18.5 on the 600 is offensive wether you are the one firing or just close by.

I think I will go more original rebuild than custom rifle.

That would be the route I would go. There's enough plastic/matte guns out there already.

I agree with BUM and Cub...... Those were really handy little bush rifles...... I would actually retire it go original..... Right up to replacing the rear sight...... A little 2-7 x 33 woukd fit it perfectly in some low rings.......

The absolute minimum I do to them is add the 4th hole, shorten and reprofile the shroud, add bottom metal, and for myself I remove the safety knob and replace it with a much smaller more pleasing (to my eye) design. However Im no fan of the 3/4 length stock either - but thats a bit more money which can be done later if you wish. These very minor things make a substantial difference for me and are not much work.

I have the exact rifle and it is a sharp shooter. Agreed that it is not a looker but it's accurate enough to bet on. Re-blue and re-finish the stock and use her. Don't waste your money on steel trigger guards and so on. It was built to sell at K Mart as a low budget option but was really popular because of accuracy.

I actually like the 3/4 stock...... I find it balances the rifle perfectly...... With a small scope, and solid bottom metal, I would hunt that all day every day........ Again, get it blued (if it was mine I would do it myself)..... Refinish the stock again, woukd do it myself......

The only extra cash I would put into it wood be to get a rear sight just because......

Damn double gun, that is excellent work ! Never liked the safety knobs on my 600's either. Fluting looks fantastic. You're gonna make me spend more money on my 600's when I thought they were done !

Mostly I pulled the barrel and ground the lump off or replaced the lug if I had a spare kicking around.

Damn double gun, that is excellent work ! Never liked the safety knobs on my 600's either. Fluting looks fantastic. You're gonna make me spend more money on my 600's when I thought they were done !

I appreciate the kind words. I hate those oversized safety knobs, and the over length over weight shrouds.

When I redo a shroud, I cut it back so you can field strip your bolt with a coin in the bush (if you ever needed to) and slim it to what I feel is a more pleasing shape.

If you have a son that will have any interest in hunting or guns, I'd have it re-blued, new bottom metal, throw on a period scope and make it new again. Pass it down. It's hardly a fancy expensive rifle, but it has some sentimental value.
I have 2 rifles my son will inherit that were my dads.

If you want a 'truck gun' or something you can rip apart and turn into something else. But another gun. If you have someone to pass this onto, keep it classic.

If you're looking to have it re-blued I can personally recommend General Gun in Windsor (they're a sponsor). I had my cooey done there and they did an amazing job. I'll be sending in a savage 170 sometime this year.

I purchased my 308 Mohawk at Eatons in Sherway Gardens .. I believe it was $99.95 (it was certainly less than $100!) and I walked out the door with it. No PAL, no FAC etc etc. just a simple business transaction.

I did build the rifle out, but can't find a picture of the completed rifle. I had $125 in the rifle and you get what you pay for (it was rough).
