Picked up a Browning Auto 5 and an Ithaca model 900 need advice.

The XL900 was a great shotgun!!!

Based on what? I had one years ago. Bought it brand new at Canadian Tire in North Bay when they were located on Cassels St. Long before I know what I now know about reliable quality guns. It may be fine to fire a box or two out of over a lifetime hunting but mine lasted 9 months on the skeet field before it sounded like an empty coffee can with a bunch of screws and nuts in it!!

I bought my XL900 new in 1977. I wouldn't know if it would have ever got to that point or not. It would only work properly for about 20 rounds and then became an expensive single shot. Cleaning the dickens out of it did nothing. It was back twice to try and have repaired but to no avail. Sat in the back of my safe for 30 years until I finally sold it.

I figure mine had over 5000 rds through it and was still working fine when I donated it to a new shooter. That was a cpl years ago and I hear it is still running strong. So there. lol

I also had modified it to fit my son when he was a little guy. Had the barrel cut back pretty short, thin wall Briley choke tubes fitted and stock shortened. Cleaned religiously after each outing. Shot mostly my own reduced power handloads.
