My Lemon, Remington 597

So I have a 2 year old Remington 597, it is currently in Quebec getting serviced for defective internal rifling, I have to admit I took it on at least 5 range trips at $20 a pop, thinking I was the problem, or the scope, or scope mount's anyway, I found my Ruger 10/22 was crushing my poor Remington(accuracy wise) and then realized the twist internal rifling stopped 6 inches short of the end of the barrel and went straight, the question is has anyone else experienced this, and did they take care of you? I am considering making another Remington purchase the 783, and for all my troubles they let me have the $40 rebate that's already expired...

I..don't...even...know...how..that..could...happen! b: No rifle in such a condition could shoot well and is definitely a warranty case for barrel replacement if I've ever heard one. My 597 of 16 years has been just fine so no experience myself with Remington warranty. How long has it been at the repair center?
 
Thanks for the replies guys, and I was thinking I got a bad Lemon, it's been gone 5 weeks and I do miss it, I love the feel, and length of pull on it too, my Ruger is all right, but not my Remington, and still wondering if I should make the next purchase with the 783 or maybe go to a Savage.
 
I feel like they have two different people making 597's
One who knows what they are doing, the other that doesn't.
My 597 is awesome, surprises people with its accuracy, always goes bang (except with 30rd aftermarket mags loaded to capacity, stock mags work fine). It's a dream of a 22lr.

Yet there are so many people who have absolute horror stories with them.

Sorry you got a lemon. When you get it back you can test it out by shooting some lemons and see if you can make lemonade.
 
Believe me Sir, if you get a 597 that is properly made, you will never go back to a 10/22 again.
They are far superior in accuracy, balance and handling.
That's my personal opinion of course after owning and shooting both designs a lot.
Don't give up on the 597. Get one that's properly made and you will be amazed at the potential in the design.
 
I've never had an issue like you describe with the rifling but I do have 2 597s and they both out shoot any 10/22 I have ever owned. The ONLY issue I have ever had with 597s is the grub screws that capture the two guide rods are sometimes too tight causing a slight bow in one or both guide rods. The fix is to simply back out the grub screws so there is no pressure on either guide rod, this allows the bolt to cycle freely.
 
I've had my 597 for 4 years, it was my first rifle. Its bone stock except for a Volquartsen Hammer and trigger. The only issue is those damn "30" rds mags that #### out.

It outshoots my 10/22 that I've modded a bit.

The Grub screws must only be Sung , over tightening then causes the two guide rod to bend out of a lineament and causes the bolt to bind and not mover far enough back to properly eject and feed rounds , this is not a design problem as the owners manual clearly states not to over tighten these two screws .

The two guide rods are almost free floating and the 597 cycles with out any problems , perhaps some prefer different ammo but that is with all rifles .

Do you mean the last 6 inches of the inside of the barrel was smooth bore ? < WENT STRAIGHT >
 
Hey Hightail, everyone, thanks for the insight, and replies, I mean the twist in the internal rifling goes straight in the last 6 inches, I've got a smooth bore shotty as well, they don't disappear, they straightened, I tried putting a picture of it as my avatar, (it even confused the auto focus on my camera). I'm just really ashamed I didn't realize it was a manufactures defect quicker, and can't wait to get it back, does anybody own the model 783?
 
I love my 597 HB. No problems and accurate as heck. Only issue that I ever have is with the 30 round mags. Sometimes get a misfeed. But my 10 round mags feed flawlessly.

Have you found a way to improve the 30 round mags? It's my only point of contention as well. I would hedge bets that if an after market company made decent mags with either steel or hard polymer mouths they would sell out in days.

If someone made a decent drum for it they would sell out in days.
 
I love my Rem 597 HB, out shot the heavy 10/22 I had no problem so sold the Ruger. I've never had a single problem with anything, ejection, firing, or feeding from any mags 30 or 10 round, not sure what problems everyone says they have with the 30 rounders? My 30 round mags were a little tight at the start so didn't load them right up to 30 until they had loosened up a bit and I've always used round nose plated bullets so maybe flat nose or non-plated have issues?
