Ready to go back to the classics, or never left?

Right you are..... I just think trucks were built better back then...... Gas guzzling straight up pigs......

It serves me well, a 1992 Dodge 1 ton dually 4X4, Cummins diesel & 5 sp. 233,000 actual kms.
Even with a 4" exhaust and different injectors it has a fraction of the horsepower of todays trucks, they pass me on the highway and I pass them when they stop for fuel.
In miles per gallon terms I average just over 21 mpg.

Sorry for the sidetrack fellas...

Nice old gun. I assume it shoots point of aim?

Yes, it actually surprised me.
With a load out of Ken Water's Pet Loads it prints about an inch and a half left of the bull @ 100 yds and in line.
Three rounds made a 1.87" group, I was astonished so about half an hour later I shot the same load again and it went 1.96" so both under 2" with the irons and its a takedown rifle.

As hard as I try to "really want" and "really need" a ***WSM or other newer "treats of the week"... after looking at the ballistics charts, actual experiences, and my actual requirements, I keep navigating back to the tried and true classics like 30-06, 7x57, 6.5x55, and the bigger bore stuff that started life as BP cartridges. No disrespect to the modern age and the legions of "I need the latest and fastest" but I think "they" got it right 60-120 years ago. Anybody else?

The classic big game stalking rifle in the classic European big game cartridge. A Husqvarna field grade FN98 in 8X57 Mauser.

The Pecar 4X scope was made in Germany and is as bright and sharp as many of the best scopes made today. Pecar was a family operation, who were more interested in building best quality optics than they were in marketing them. The factory sights come up like a fine shotgun, and the outfit swings and points like an extension of your arm.

They really had it figured when they were building these rifles.

Never left. I have hunted whitetail deer for 50 years with a .303 British, 30-30, .32 Special, 8x57, and one whiz bang caliber - 8mm-06. Years ago, the craze was for 7mm Remington Magnum. Everybody and his dog had to have a 7mm mag.

My favourite old rifle cartridges are 35 Rem, 30-06, 375H&H, 45 Colt, 45-70

My favourite new rifle cartridges are 6.8SPC, 300RUM, 375RUM

My favourite wildcat for rifles is 375JDJ

My favourite middle age rifle cartridge is 270 Wby

I have a soft spot for classic rifles and cartridges. Give me levers, peep sights, and 100+ year old cartridges. 22 RF, 32-20, 32 Special, 22 Hornet, 303 Brit. My newest is 223 and it is over 50 years old. I no longer hunt so fun and easy is my credo now. Reloading and cast make cartridges approaching a 100+ much more manageable.

These cartridges mostly have rims, a plus to me, and shapes that promote feeding into a chamber. Their ample to long necks are also a positive for me.

When talking to hunters looking for advice I almost always recommend a 308 or 30-06.
