Hey guys,

Long story short just got that sweet 17 in a trade, i need a quality scope to put on it. I was currently looking at Leupold VX-II 4x12x40 AO Fine Duplex or 6x18x40 AO Fine Duplex. they do make a 4x12x50 without AO with the fine duplex reticle.

I would to cull pests around my property, coons, foxes and other critters with the rifle but also have fun shooting pistol brass at 100yard.

I'm open to a different brand than Leupold but i only had good experiences with them and that is what all my Coopers are wearing. Prophet Rivers got a nice deal on Leupolds for fathers day so i might pull the trigger on one, tonight or maybe i should sleep on it! Ha!

Thanks in advance for any inputs!

There's nothing wrong with the VX-2, but my two cents is that I'd much prefer SF over AO on a sporting rifle. A VX-3 4.5x-14x with SF and a fine duplex reticle would be just about perfect in my opinion, or a VX-6 3x-18x if you decide you really like the rifle, and will use it enough to justify it.

I'm currently on a Sightron kick at the moment, just spent a week shooting with an S1...and got to try an S3 as well. Great scopes for the money if you ask me. Got a pair of Sightron binoculars too~very pleased with them.

SF beats AO every time, but, my next scope may be an S2, 4-16x.

That cooper is such a neat package. Personally I would not spoil the lines by putting a big bulky scope on it .Look at one of the more compact models with AO and you probably do not need more than 10 or 12 power at top end for gophers.

This is good advice.

I have a cz 452 in hmr and have a vortex viper 3-9x40 on it. Haven't felt underscored with it shooting gophers.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of gophers to shoot in Quebec. The OP wants to shoot at 100 yards, so more magnification is desirable.

Thanks, even if I didn't exactly follow it myself lol. I got this little optic for my yet-to-be-delivered Cooper HMR (10 months and counting now) as there is already a lot of effective range overlap with my 204. Simple, compact, and low key for my short-ish range sporter HMR. The Leupolds are a much better value for the money IMO, but for my particular criteria it fit the bill perfectly.

All of my Coopers wear Zeiss HD-5 3-15x42 Lockplex scopes. They aren't cheap, but they track consistently, they hold zero, they have constant eye relief, and they are clear and bright.

Yes I am aware of that. I shoot mine at targets as well. Can see the holes at 100 yards and have zero problem hitting shotgun hulls at 200 as long as the prairie wind isn't howling.
In fact every gun I have except one wears a 3-9x40 and one that has a 4-16x50 that is built for 600+ yard target shooting.

I too use Sightrons(SI,II and III), put a SIIB 6.5-20 on my HMR , perfect fit, nice to have that magnification when shooting little critters.

It's always good to hear from shooters who target shoot successfully with 3-9X scopes on a rimfire out to 200 yards.

I agree. The current trend seems to be 25 power scopes with all kinds of knobs on them. For a competition gun I can see it but for most of us it isn't needed at all. All my scoped 22's every had were 3-9's as well. Ive shot them past 300 yards without feeling like I needed more zoom.
