Gmx failure(dead bear pics)

why is the dgx prone to failure?

try the e-tip guys. if I knew how to post pics if put some up of what they do to a black bears shoulder. the open up to a slightly larger frontal area than a tsx meaning the tsx will penetrate slightly more but give you a smaller diameter wound channel.

accubonds like mentioned above are awesome. if I could only shoot one single big game bullet from here on out it would be the accubond. the real accubond not the accubond long range

I heard the GMXs are made of guilding metal which apparently is harder and more brittle than pure copper.
An attempt by the manufacturer to minimize copper fouling might have resulted in a more frangible bullet.
I am just speculating as I have never used this brand of bullet.

nosler e-tips are also made of guilding metal, 95% copper and 5% zinc. nosler says it makes the bullet "tougher" than all cooper and less likely to loose a petal. far as I remember the gmx opens to 6 petals, the nosler and barnes open to a for sure 4. the smaller petals of the gmx will be easier to rip off one would think.

Interesting reading guys since I just switched over to the superformance GMX bullet in my. 300 WM. Got it sighted in for my annual moose trip coming up this fall. I am impressed with the balistics and the bullet performance that I have read until seeing this thread today. Has me wondering now. Changed from the tried a true Federal Premium trophy bonded bear claw that I have been using for years. Hopefully the OP's experience here with that bullet is not something that is going to be common place. I think that like a few others have alluded to, it is a combination of too much gun for that short of range and hitting some bone. Maybe with a bit more distance and time to shed off some energy, it might have been a different story.

May wish to chronograph those loads now and just before you go hunting. I lost 120fps in the 7mm rem mag 139gr version from summer to hunting temperature. The supeformance "advantage" disappears when it gets cold in my experience.

Good to know. Is that common with all powders or just this stuff?

Some powders are more temperature stable, like the Hodgdon Extreme line of powders. Having used them, I can attest to that. Other powders react quite radically to temp changes, like some of the IMR powders and Reloder powders. Many ball powders are temp reactive (not all). But IMR now has the Enduron line and some of the Reloder powders are more temp stable. You'd need to do some research. If you hunt in an area with extreme temp variances, it's a good idea to zero both in warm and in cold weather so you know how your rifle/cartridge combo performs.

I shot a black bear with a 90 grain Gmx at 100 yards from a 257wby a couple years ago, the bear dropped in its tracks but mine came apart too, I had 4 exit holes on the off side and lots of wasted meat. I found one of the peddles in the meat and never recover the other pieces, I wasn't impressed with how the bullet came apart

Thats just BullS*it that happening like that ! :p :( A TTSX or TSX would NEVER do that ! ;) RJ

I shot a buck facing me with a 100gr tsx from my 257 wby at 3500 fps impact speed and the buck dropped in his tracks. Bullet traveled down the middle of 18" of vertebrae and was found just in front of the rear hip against the hide with no petals left. Still have that bullet.

This is all I found in my deer I shot this past fall.

139gr GMX shot out of a Tikka T3 in 7mm Rem Mag. Deer at 15yds quartering towards me, bullet entered at the front right shoulder, went through the scalpula, and I found it in the hide just behind the ribs on the far side.

What was the final weight of the bullet? Looks like it lost some petals...

Looks like it actually held together pretty well considering the impact velocity into bone.

I don't have a scale of any sort so I can't weigh it. But I'd say 1/4 to 1/3 is left.

But like was said. It pretty much smashed bone at muzzle velocity. It's factory ammo and I don't have a crony so the package says 3190fps
