I bought the gauge at the link below, the problem with this gauge is one end is too small and the other end too large to tell you anything. Meaning at its large diameter end you can seat primers with your fingers. I went smaller with my pin gauges to ensure a tight snug fit with a seated primer. My pin gauges are .0005 and .001 smaller than the diameter of the primers I'm using.
As you can see below a gauge with one max diameter of approximately .1750 will not cover all primers and primer pockets.
When loading my AR15 ammunition I keep higher standards because I'm buying once fired brass. And with a bolt action just using the Lee depriming tool is good enough for testing the primers.
I did not say that, I do not bother checking for primer pockets that are too small. Meaning even bothering to use the small end of the Ballistic Tools gauge or a pin gauge.
All that matters is if the primer pockets are larger than the primers you are using. I'm using Remington 7 1/2 primers and my pin gauge I use is .0005 smaller than primer diameter.
Bottom line the large end of the Ballistic Tools gauge is too large to tell you anything because the primers are smaller in diameter than this gauge. So if the Ballistic Tools NO-GO or largest end fits into the primer pocket you can put primers in with just your fingers.
I use the pin gauges to pre-inspect the primer pockets "BEFORE" prepping the brass and seating a primer. And if the pin gauge fits into the primer pocket the case goes in the scrap brass bucket before doing anything else to the case. My Remington 7 1/2 primers are .1750 and my pin gauge is .1745 or .0005 smaller in diameter.
I started doing this so I would not size and prep the case after removing the primer crimp only to find out it has a oversized primer pocket when seating a primer. And again this applies to buying once fired Lake City brass and Lake City range pickup brass that are fired in my AR15 rifles.
