I finally took my new chrono out to my friend's place and set it up. Here's my take:

1. Easy to set up (once I figured out what goes where). Next time will be a lot simpler.

2. It does not work in bright sunny conditions. Kept showing errors galore.

3. RTFM - says right in the manual about #2. :)

4. Easy to use app on my i5 phone. (Downloaded beforehand)

5. Worked like a charm in a shaded spot.

6. Next time I will take my iPad, as it is much easier to read without glasses.

7. App is super easy to use (with glasses on!)

I was shooting a really nice old dou45 98 that was rebarreled to 7.62 NATO. Fired a few made up rounds, one batch was 10.3-10.5 gr of Unique with a 155/160 gr Lee gas checked WW .309, averaged 1509 fps and 1513 fps in three shot groups, grouped good at 45 yds. Second batch also made up with 44.2 gr of powder from Yugo surplus 8x57, same bullet as first group, averaged 2169, one three shot group.

I am having trouble focusing the rear sight, especially in bright sunlight. At one time, I had a no-drill mount for 98's, but the rifle it was on got stolen.

Did you use the shades in the bright spot? It should have cleared up the problem. I am pretty happy with my kit as well. The app is great.

Have the same kit, used it in sun with the shades and it worked fine. Yes the ap is great on iPhone, will even load name brand bullet data for you automatically and then email you the results - very handy.

Well, I just set it up according to the manual. The place I was shooting has a fixed table, as in big and heavy and one direction to shoot. Not sure how I would "shade" the instrument unless I use a separate piece of something. There is a sturdy metal stand to mount a chrono, but I didn't have a bolt so I had to use the included tripod. I will make a shade that can be clamped to the stand for next time.

This kit has always worked well for me. The tripod is on the cheap and flimsy side though. The elevation handle broke on mine. Still does the job fine. I wish the wire to connect to my phone was longer.

Can probably find an extension auxiliary cable at the Source or a place like it. Just needs to be male and female ends.

The kit comes with shades... The white plastic things about 12" long by 3" wide that fit into the rods... Use them when it's bright and sunny out. It's the whole purpose of them.

You must have just been in a really bad spot then. I expected to Caldwell to be junk considering the price but it has actually worked out pretty well. The biggest issue I have is errors when shooting indoors. Sometimes the muzzle flash from shorter barreled guns fools the sensors.

Yep. Really bright day. Worked fine in a shaded spot. Tickled the way it works so nicely with an attached iPhone or iPad. Another toy to play with! :)
