Hey CGN,

I'm trying to track down a synthetic stock for a friends Remington 742 rifle but have been having difficulty finding any. If you know of any shops (preferably site sponsors, but doesn't have to be) that carry these new or used, please let me know. Also, if you have one collecting dust that you would be willing to part with, let me know as well!

Thanks all,
ASD

I believe I have one, was going to use it on my 742 6mm, but never ended up using the rifle and a fello member on site here was asking for a 6mm for his collection of 742's, and he wanted the wood stock only. I don't see it at this moment, but it is here somewhere, I'm pretty sure, I know I didn't sell it! When Jr has time, he may know where it is, if so, I'll get him to wipe the dust off lol, and take a pic. I can't remember what I paid for it, so in the mean time if you want, do some research on the pricing of them and we'll work something out. I just saw the wood stock for my 742 308 carbine in the syn stock package that it's stock came in. The other one is likely in the basement.

I am looking for the same thing now!Lol. Do any of you guys know if there is a difference in the receiver of a BDL model 742? I know the wood furniture is different and I think it is mostly the fore end shape that requires a longer bolt for a sling swivel set up. I don't think the mounting points on the metal are any different, correct me if I am wrong..

Apparently all receivers are the same. I ordered a synthetic stock today to replace my BDL wood set. Unfortunately I can't get the old butt stock off. The damn bolt is seized after being in there for 41 yrs!! They used a slot head on the bolt not a hex head. No way its budging. I took the trigger group out and sprayed penatrating fluid down the hole where the bolt end is. Hopefully I can get it loose tomorrow. It not, I will have a synthetic set for sale and a refund for the guy who bought the wood set from me. Sh¥tty.

get a big screw driver of the correct size tip (snug fit), get your buddy with the powerful hands, have him turn the screw driver while you whack the handle of the screwdriver with a dead blow hammer. I'll beta ya a bottle of good whiskey, that you will turn that screw out! If you can hold that screwdriver tight in the head slot, you could also put a wrench on the screwdriver shaft. I'll send you my mailing address where you can mail me the liquor store gift card!:)

If you have a soldering iron, get it nice and hot and hold it on the middle of the screwhead before trying to remove it....

Tried the hammer trick already,, no luck. The head of the bolt was starting do get destroyed so I gave up. No idea why they wouldn't have used a socket head on the bolt. Dumb. Now I have a used set of synthetic stocks inbound if anyone needs a set, let me know.Lol. I refunded the buyer of the BDL wood stock that I couldn't get off. I will just sell the gun as is.

Edit: Tried a torch today. Took out the trigger group and heated up the end of the bolt. Still no luck. I am not sure how much heat to put on it. The receiver was pretty hot, thought that would be enough. Didn't budge.

Some tight bolts need a heat and cool process a few times over.
As a last ditch effort, why not take it to a local Smith? It should come out, unless some fool has loctited it in!

No local smiths in my area. Gonna give it one more try tomorrow.

Forget the screwdriver, get your 3/8 ratchet a long extension and a 1/4" socket. Put the receiver in a padded vies and use the proper sized driver bit. Use even pressure and it should break loose.

now there's an idea and a half! Good one! That sucka Shirley Should turn out!

Well success at last! Found a large flat bit from an old impact set, put it in a deep 3/8 socket and used a 6inch T handle. The bolt spun out lickety-split. Got the new synthetic stock installed and the Beautiful BDL basket weave will be off to it's new owner on Monday. Thanks for all the help guys.
