870 Express Quality

Never had any problems with my 870 Express that I bought back in 2009 - still looks brand new and functions extremely well - I do clean it after every use as if it was a $1,500 shotgun though.
 
Bought my express back in 2007. Put hundreds of rounds down it. Cleaned it ONCE in all these years. Never had any issues with it, no rust, nothing broken, no feeding issues.
 
I prefer the Remington 870 Wingmaster.

I would rather have a used Wingmaster than a brand new 870 Express or Tactical.

Plus it's cheaper.

The extractor literally fell apart on his 2nd round that day. Ruined his day. Made me think twice now about the 870s. Sure was warranty but neither of us were impressed.

I find that this happens to guy's that like to take things apart, a buddy of mine can not resist not disassembling any thing he buys, needless to say when it does not go back together quite right or breaks in short order he blames the gun, My motto don't touch until broken, I do not know if that is the case here, good luck with the warranty.
 
Had issues with the tactical express model with extraction, a couple stovepipes. Also it would rust if you took it outside... At all. Other than that it was good very nicely built and I loved the sights and the ergonomics. Had an old wing master before and after no issues.
 
I think the QC at Remington can be hit and miss, but things seem to have improved. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Express if I needed one. My Marine Magnum will likely outlast me.
 
I have the 870 3.5" waterfowl express, and if not maintained, a 3 day hunt, rust started, mind you the conditions were quite "ducky" but is this not the purpose of it? Anyways, I had to polish the chamber, but this was really to eject cheaper shells for trap shooting for fun. It is now my backup gun, but have shot 1000's of rounds though it, and is a great gun really. The aftermarket parts for 870's and the simple mechanics is what sold me as well. I take care of my guns, and if you get one, just be aware of the rust that can form, but just keep it well oiled and this shouldn't end up being an issue.

When Remington brought out the Express in the 80's I was disgusted then!! Compared to it's predecessor the Wingmaster it was horrible but it was reliable. However like everything else Remington has done since the late 50's and early 60's the downhill slide continued right up until today's absolute junk they produce. I understand now why the farmers in Ohio shooting at the Grand used to say Remington hasn't produced a gun worthy of anything but use as a lightning rod in a corn field in 30 years! If someone gave me one of todays Remington expresses I could not sell it fast enough!

He did not take it apart. It was as new. But I agree with the point. Its just failed.
