would like to spot grouping on .22 cal and up at 100yds (150 would be nice to have but really need to 100 yds)

budget of about $100 to $150 on this item.

Would like that it sit on a tripod so can check each group as I go.

Thanks!

Dan

Currently, Canadain Tire have a couple of Spotting 'Scopes on sale,( In-Store specials perhaps?) and I think they're within, or close to your "price Point". No idea how good they are or if they'd even perform within your parameters. .... Otherwise, you should have a look at buying a used one..... David K

It is my opinion that with the budget you have given ($110-$150) you will be very disappointed with the results. Several years ago (before I was in the business) I obtained a cheap Bushnell Sentry spotter that was almost useless for anything even at close range for seeing detail like bullet holes. At higher magnification the image was very grainy. Most quality rifle scopes above 12X will offer better detail. Try to at least double your budget or look for a good used unit in a Bushnell Elite or higher end Vortex. Go to a store that will allow you to go outside to compare some models side by side. Phil.

I agree, that's just not enough money to get something worth using. Don't get me wrong, I'm not made of money by any means, and my gun collection consists mostly of used inexpensive firearms, but you just can't get a spotting scope worth having for that. I'd look for a better used one in order to stick to your budget. That's why I don't have one at the moment...

Agreed. I bought a discount scope ($100 range) at Canadian Tire and it's essentially useless at 100 yards

I think you will be spending over $200 to get a scope that will fill your requirements, although Ive used a cheap Bushmaster scope, and could see .22 holes at a 100 yards, if you have it focused properly.

I bought a Tasco World class 20-60X scope. It works well out to 200 yards, I haven't gone beyond that. I think it cost $140. The caveat is that you must mount it on a good tripod. I own some good Manfrotto tripods I have around for photography that cost more than the scope, and I am very pleased.

It would be preferable if you went slightly over your 100 to 150$ budget.

Spotting bullet holes on paper, especially 22 CAL requires a minimum of quality.

I once had a cheap 60x spotting scope ( Winchester branded I think) and the resolution was so poor that I could pick up indicators on the target with a 12x Zeiss that I could not make out with the 60x scope. You might do well to look at older used units from the big names rather than a new really cheap unit.

Don't waste your money. At that price you won't see anything.

This.

You may as well roll that $100 bill into a cylinder and try to look at your target through it. Will be about the same quality of image as a $100 spotting scope. If you want to upgrade look through a toilet paper tube (wider field of view).

Try the Bushnell Discoverer. It's 20 to 60 power with a 60mm objective. Sells about $250.00 and works quite nicely to 300 m. I also found a surplus mortar tube that protects it very well.

I have had a few cheap ones given to me by friends and the only one that I have kept is a Firefield that was bought for me by my wife through Amazon. The clarity is actually quite good for 100 yards, it is compact and clear. Currently on sale, too. w w w.amazon.ca/Firefield-FF11018K-20-60x60SE-Spotting-Scope/dp/B005CGIIE2/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467163743&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=firefeld+spotting+scope
