Just read on the Bilozir website that Ugartechea has stopped production.

From the Bilozir website "Ugartechea has stopped production of guns. They cite a weak market, labour and financial problems. They have a small number of stock guns available, as is, where is."

Did a quick Google search and could not find any other news release about this.
 
If true, it's another gun maker disappearing into the sunset. Too bad. If you can't compete with the likes of the lower priced Turkish guns now, it could certainly be a problem. And I imagine the high end market is small for double guns and there is competition out there. Of course other factors maybe adding to its possible demise are the policies on how the company is run which we know nothing about.

I met Ignacio in Eibar and along with a couple of friends had the privilege of having lunch with him at his private club. He was well into his senior years then and that was over 15 years ago so I'd guess he's into late 80's if not early 90's now. A fine and very cultured man.

I couldn't find anything about Ugartechea stopping production on either the Shooting Sportsman or on Doublegunshop.com. Not saying it isn't correct but I couldn't confirm the information.

The demise of small gun makers, dependent on a lot of handwork at low wages, is a repeated phenomenon. Anyone remember the demise of British gunmaking?
Great British gunmaking has risen again, making full use of modern technology, with peerless hand finishing. This market is very small compared to the production gun market.
As always, it is sad to see a distinguished gunmaker fold.

Excellent book and written by a Canadian incidentally. I've been to all the places mentioned in that book and had many of the same adventures.
