Corwin Arms Ricol. The 20-16 (20 gauge, 16.5" over/under barrels) is still in stock. 32" OAL, about 19" at the longest, once taken down.

I think the OPs stated parameters may be a tad too broad, considering the answers range from 9mm to 12 guage to 45-70. The Sub2000 is probably not the last word in bear defense, while employing a 45-70 for gopher removal may be somewhat excessive.

Any gun you need had better be assembled when you need it. Take down rifles are as good as a stick when you're in need.
If you run in to a situation where you had time to assemble a rifle, even if it's just snap together, for defense, you didn't really need it.

I like my Springfield Scout. 22 & .410, good for gophers, not so good for bear. Mind you, I'm not sure your JR carbine is going to bother the bear much, either. The scout breaks into two small bits with the pull of a pin. Ammo fits in the stock. Problem: no longer being made. Maybe the Chiappa x-calibre as an alternative?

I've got the Chiappa M6 in 20 gauge over .22. Folds in half, fits in a backpack nicely. A 3" 20 gauge slug is not slouch... I put a little Bushnell red dot on it, but the irons are serviceable. Makes a nice little grouse gun.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the obvious, a Winchester M12.

I bought a Chiappa .44 magnum lever action takedown for that reason. It has a 12" barrel, it fits the bill perfect and is a beautiful riffle. Only downside it is 1500 plus tax. I also have the storm in 9 mm but I am just not comfortable with it as a bear defence gun.

Did you use the existing thread holes for your rail, or drill/tap your own? The factory holes are M4x0.7, and the Weaver #50 base corresponds to the spacing.

The Baikal 22 mag/3" 20 gauge combination with dual triggers is perfect for me but to be honest I haven't done to much bush hunting with it. Regardless it's overall length is short and it breaks down nicely into a compact package.
