I searched the forums but couldn't find anything right away.

But any rate, what kind of deer calls are recommended to use to bring them in? I've found a few likely spots and downloaded a couple neat call apps to my phone and I'm feeling like amusing myself and testing them out to see if they work before the season opens.

I make my deer calls from a pice of wood and marking tape
It's bin my experience that deer calls only work jurring the Rut
man do thay work wen the deer are horned up

From my experience. How you use the call is far more important the the style or make of the call itself. Practice with a few, see what works for you.

Thanks guys, carverk my wife actually read about your calls in another post and laughed and then decided she wants to try it out sometime. So mayhap we may Google that too, I like trying stuff for amusement and if it works it's a bonus. You only live once, might as well experiment ;)

Bydabeav I have no knowledge about calls, period. I have fawn distress calls, to estrus, to bucks sparring and doe grunts etc (I have the ruger call app on samsung). So with so many options I'm not sure which to try out, the rutting calls are an obvious leave till rutting season. But was curious if a fawn distress call would bring in bucks or something.

Or if it is a hard sell period. I have my eyes on 3-4 different places all of the areas if seen tracks/droppings/doe or bucks and I'm trying to rate them in terms of getting the best animal out. I may use two older phones I have and use one to call and the other as a video and leave them for a couple hours to see what happens or place a phone in the spot and just watch what happens.

Bottom line is I am just amusing myself, but if this is likely to work it is a big bonus.

I wanna say you can't hunt ungulates with an electronic call in BC... so the phone idea will not be usable during the hunting season.

Fawn distress may bring in a coyote or wolf as well. It's loaded on my foxpro. Personally I've had no luck calling deer, so haven't tried it in a few years. May have to try again. Lol.

I live in a place where Blacktails frequent so I can observe their reaction to various deer calls, rattling, grunting, fawn calls, bleats, etc before ,during and after the rut. Most are ignored,no reaction by bucks or does.I see pushing and shoving between bucks, licking a branch over their head but only once did I see a major fight between two big bucks that tore up the bushes and ground over an acre, much grunting .

But only once, sitting up in my observation post,I heard buck grunt back at me....just once, a big fork, about 50' away in heavy brush, but he didn't move towards me.So they do answer calls....sometimes....

If you are going to use a deer call for Mule Deer I suggest you get a fawn bleat and practice with it.

It may not "bring in" a deer but it is priceless when used to stop a walking deer so you can get off a good shot.

The home made deer call is simple and works amazingly The purpose of the call is to mimic a lost fawn in distress
Doe's and fawns will run right up to you but the Bucks take a bit more work just keep working the call if thers a doe thers a horny buck hiding in the bush
I find the deer call works best during the rut

Just checked the regs and you are right. If I see any movement using the phone app I'll invest in a proper call.

Looks like the consensus is I may be wasting time, but I'll fool around and if it works I'll waste my money more ;)

Ps Carverk if you want to link me to how to make it or tell me again that would be awesome if not I'll Google it ;)

Pss rather be fishing.... are you joking? I can't tell lol

Sorry if this is off topic; but does anyone know how to make or where to buy the little (around 2x2 inches) deer calls that make a bleat noise? Guys use them to stop running deer, you wear them around your neck on a lanyard.
