Im wondering what I should use for my Remington's
1988 Remington 700 bdl 338 win mag
Not sure year, just waiting on it, Remington 700 sps 300 win mag

Im thinking the weaver bases with the extra highs, or high, I have the high ones, but im thinking of 50 mm optic but a 4-12x, what's your opinions?
Purpose would be hunting mostly but the odd target shoot

I would not use a rail. It makes it much more awkward to load. High is plenty high enough for a 50 objective but like Chuck said I would forget about the 50. Maybe just go to a better quality scope.

Im thinking that size because I wear glasses and found the smaller harder to see
Any advice for the rail or mount?

I agree with Chuck..... The 50mm objective isn't going to help you see any better with your glasses on.....

Some say the 50mm lets more light in at last light, but I found the difference minimal...... And I also find he 50mm bell help make the rifle top heavy and unpleasant to carry......

My thoughts...
Weaver Bases - No
Extra High Rings - No
50mm Objective - No
4-12x scope - No

You would be much better keeping your top end magnification at or under 10x to prevent the need for an adjustable objective. For a hunting rifle I would go with a 3.5-10x 40mm Leupold VX3 in Leupold Dual Dovetail rings and bases. You don't need 50mm especially if you buy quality glass. The 4mm exit pupil of the Leupold will work just fine for your hunting needs. Medium rings will mount the scope at the proper height so that you still have a decent cheek weld which goes a long a toward recoiled mitigation.

I wear glasses, and my 338 wears a Leupold VX-III 2.5 - 8 x 36 for optics.
So far, I have not found any situation where these optics are at a disadvantage.
As others have said....forget that ungainly 50mm objective lens.

Dave.

Don't get a rail unless you need one, which on a normal hunting rifle is probably never. No use blocking up the reciever for elevation you don't need. Put that money toward a better scope.

A 4-12 might be OK, depending on how much target shooting you do. Normally I'd be looking at something to top out around 9-10, but having said that I put a 4.5-14 on my own .338 for diagnostic purposes and haven't found any pressing reason to take it back off. Habit and familiarity count for something. 50mm lens are best left for higher magnification and night shooting.

Take a look at DNZ GameReaper all in one mounts, either model 30700 or 32700. Always really liked those. For me, model 26700, Long Action Low brought a 50mm objective so close to the barrel the lens caps wouldn't fit. I'd probably go for a medium height one, it would likely sit nice and close to the barrel without being too close. YMMV, measure twice, buy once.

Thanks all, just wondering what scopes under 300 with a life time warranty would you suggest, im a dunce and bought tasco for my Remington 783 its great, but the recoil in the larger rifles would kill it

This has to be one of the most asked questions around. For $300 you don't get much. Maybe try a used Vortex Viper. Their lifetime warranty is transferable. Great scopes for the money too, but more than $300 new for sure.

BUM out of curiosity why no weaver bases? the steel ones are very strong.

Leupold always recommended us to use the DD bases and rings for heavy or fast caliber like the 30-378 but nothing on the 338.

QRW rings are also very strong.

on another note i used with success a 4-12x50 from Leupold on a 300 wea mag but to avoid any issue i sighted in a 12x and never move down the settings.

The Weavers will work fine. I've used them on several 375magnums, but like Chuck says "forget the 50mm" and go to the lowest possible combination possible. A high mounted scope will not allow a good cheek contact to your stock, something you will need for accuracy, ease of shooting and recoil control.

Since you mention "hunting mostly" for this rifle, a Leupold 2.5x8 in low mounts would be perfect. I have one. It's been used on several rifle and is my favourite hunting scope overall.

Hey Phil ....... There is nothing wrong with plain old aluminum Weaver bases and the steel ones are better still. If used with good rings and mounted properly they will work fine. I have never had a problem with them on any rifle I've used them on incl several 375s. I used them on both trips to you neck of the woods with no second thoughts.

Not sure about BUM, but there is a lot of folk out there who will thumb their nose at weavers and not realize it's the most copied system out there and has been doing the job for several decades w/o problems.
