You know what guys, I think I have taken about all the sh!t I'm willing to take on this site while trying to help fellow shooters and hunters. Trying to guide them with cartridge and rifle selections for different hunting situations that I have experienced...............but every computer expert knows more than me and calls me down, despite my experience.................so y'all know what, I quit...........Get your advice from computer experts who have never set foot in the bush in NA and certainly not in Africa or Asia, because they know way more than I do, and will tell you so. I doubt I'll ever post on CGN again...............Y'all have a good time..............

Take a break, but do not quit.

I have learned a lot from you. For example, when you claimed that 270 grains and .366 are a match in heaven, I believe it. I have since only used 270 grain matrix bullets.

Anyway, if you want to bring your experiences and knowledge to the tomb after 40 years from today, that is a loss for many cgners.

Btw, I have not believed everything you said. One example is when you claimed the lion you shot a few years ago was 1000 lbs, I did not think so. I think you added 3-400 lbs on it. But, it was no big deal. We all brag our trophies. The fish I lost from my hook is always a very big one.

Doug, we all know these opinionated, no nothing, closet anti, experts are out there, posting from the safety of their mom's basements, because they lack the courage to get out into the real world and experience it for themselves. They will never know anything beyond the theoretical; all men die, but few men live. Anyone who has seriously looked into a dangerous game safari knows one doesn't just wander out into the great hunting concessions of East Africa on their own, anymore than they could on an out of province grizzly hunt; you play the cards you're dealt, or you fold.

I'd hate to see you leave here for good. You posts are always informative, based on the experiences of a life well lived, and they always make the reader think and reconsider his own position and experiences. I hope you'll reconsider, I've still got lots to learn.

Don't take it so hard Douglas, there'll always be someone who claims experience doesn't count, if they can never afford to do it. Sometimes you just have to laugh to yourself and let it go.:d
 
Man I know what its like to be hunting in grizz territory. I passed a stool pile 24in wide and a good 12in thick where I was hunting. Never before had my 30-06 felt puny.Just disregard the mall ninjas and keep up the good work. Some of us actually will use your information to better ourselves. And its a good read. Take heart. Some of us actually care and get out of the basement....

My apologies, Douglas. I didn't call you a loser. You obviously have some experience. But in my opinion you started this fight with what I consider a really condescending post ranting about the 45-70 owners needing to "get their heads out of their asses" :)

You have a fair amount of experience you can share with people asking about African cartridges, etc, but you don't get to pontificate and denigrate and try to shut others out of the conversation because they see things differently. My experience in Africa was different than yours; I lived in a bush village for 3 years, hunted for meat and saw first hand how the locals get by (and kill hippos, lions, etc, for that matter). So we're coming from different perspectives; I am fully aware how the sport hunting industry is regulated and works in African countries. The way you hunted is your only option when you travel there for a safari.

Sorry I pissed you off, my friend. But to be honest, you kinda pissed me off too, with your condescending attitude in that post. And yes, I am a computer expert. I also have more first hand experience with Africa than you do, I'd bet. I can't afford one safari, never mind several; but I know more than a little about real-world hunting in Africa.

I think the lesson here is that if you dish something out, you better expect to have it returned in kind. So if you dish it out, you better be able to take it.

I guess the other option is to take your ball and go home. ;)

Major-You should share some of your stories with us if you feel like it. Maybe on another thread. ;)

Not sure about the No. 3 Ruger, but the No. 1 T will drag your shoulder off of a long hike.
And ' c-fbmi '... don't want to hold your hand, lol...but the stories are always looked forward to by myself as well

What Douglas is saying is very understandable, if you want to hunt the big 5 in Africa there are better choices than the 45-70 .
But what MMC is saying is that the 45-70 is more than capable to take down any of the big 5 and I also agree with that.
And you fellas might ask what experience do you have, well never been on a safari or shoT anything bigger than the 375h&h except the 45-70 .
But I can tell you that I was born in east Africa , Mozambique and lived there for 16 years and hunted pretty much everything that was there to be hunted with a medium bore the venerable 375H&H ☺.
Douglas and MMC both of you have merit on what you guys have said, that's my humble opinion .

9.8 pounds scoped, in my case which is a teensy bit less than my 45/70. That wasn't exactly what I was getting at though, more that I've killed a lot of buffalo at higher velocity, and a lot at lower velocity due to stretching ranges past what most people would shoot them at. Higher velocity loads hit harder, slower loads hit softer. These fat bullets lose speed so fast that some with particularly poor BCs turned pathetic faster than the others. We used to joke that the first one that turned into a 45/70 was the loser.;)

Just curious: when you shot them at longer range, what distance are we talking about?

I do not see a lesson learned here, instead I see one person being sarcastic and insulting to another regarding a topic that is totally irrelevant to the original question being asked.
The original question in these discussions does quite often become side-tracked serving no useful purpose.
