Firing cartridges designed for African game for no good reason.

I do not see a lesson learned here, instead I see one person being sarcastic and insulting to another regarding a topic that is totally irrelevant to the original question being asked.
The original question in these discussions does quite often become side-tracked serving no useful purpose.

I'd encourage you to read the whole thread, and if I'm the alleged "sarcastic/insulting" person (I have to assume, being as Doug is a friend and all so it's probably not him), understand that my sarcasm was in response to a very reactive, inflammatory and condescending rant by your friend about some comments that a few interjected into the thread about how heavy 45-70 loads in a light Ruger fallingblock kick a lot :) That's all it was, a few comments about recoil. But Doug went on a tirade about how those damn 45-70 zealots on this forum always insist on sticking their pathetic old relic in any discussion about big bores. And dammit, he's not gonna take it any more!

And just to be clear, if anyone was "insulting" anyone, it was the person telling others to "get their heads out of their asses"; that's what he thought of their opinions.

Read the whole thread. I truly am sorry if Doug has decided to leave; he has a lot to offer. But so do many others. We are all grown ups here; if someone says something inflammatory (including me), we better be prepared to get some push back. No matter how much money or experience we think we have.

Cheers.

Keep justifying... keep explaining... keep this bullshyte alive... if "we are all grown ups here," why don't you "ferme ta bouche" and walk away.

Douglas, the problem with drawing lines in the sand is that, eventually, you end up standing on a small piece of real estate... ignore the critics and blow-hards.

Good post. Like I said, you get back what you give.

You have nothing to apologize for. CFBMI was rude and you responded in kind, which is understandable.

I like solids myself, provided the profile has a flat or hemispherical nose, with parallel sides, and the bullet is short for caliber. A flat nose solid tends to give up velocity in soft tissue at a slower rate than a tapered solid, since there is no friction acting it's shank, so straight line penetration is the rule rather than the exception. The flat nose solid displaces a volume of soft tissue that seems all out of proportion to it's diameter, while leaving full caliber holes in large bones, it tends not follow that path of least resistance should a big bone takes a glancing hit, and it easily doubles the depth of penetration of a soft point, reducing the problems soft points can have with quartering away or head on shots. A hard cast WFN can act like a solid, particularly when a 480 gr is used in a .45-70 or a 550 gr is used in a .458, against light to medium density targets. I like the 480 gr WFN in the .458, it gives me 2225 fps from a 21" barrel, penetrates like a solid, and it expands just a little bit at that velocity.

This was a fun read! OP, it really isn't bad. I had the same .375 desire and recoil concerns. I bought one and it isn't anything special, used it to pop a few grouse in the head and a couple rabbits. Hopefully bear next year. When I take it out to the range, I'll go through 20 rounds or more with no ill effect (other than my wallet).

The 10.5 pound rifle helps... I have found all of my RSM .375's to recoil similarly to a 7 pound .30/06... very manageable.

I've read John pondoro Taylors book but what is the minimum to reliably break an elephants rear hips if one had to send a bullet in in a last attempt sort of deal. I was at the museum looking at the mammoth skeleton which I know isn't the same as today's elephants but I gotta say that's a fat ass. Massive solid bones. Could a mid bore like the 375 break those hips or are the 458 and ups needed?

So I fired my new .458 win mag this weekend. It was definitely noticeable recoil but not unmanageable. I only fired 2 shots. It did leave me feeling a bit rattled. Not something I want to fire a lot in a session. But knowing I can handle it has actually boosted my confidence firing lesser calibres. The .300 win mag was seemingly nothing in comparison.

I don't know what I'd hunt with it but I've decided to hold onto the .458 for now.

Took my new to me 375 H&H to the range today. Great rifle, shoots like a hot 30-06. It will replace my 30-06 for regular hunting duties. Only 1.2lbs heavier.

When you get to where you can shoot a few boxes of stiff handloads (huge difference to factory loads) out of a .458; it completely changes your viewpoint on smaller calibers. The first time you catch yourself calling a 7 pound .300 a nice little gun and meaning it, or finding that even smaller cartridges bave gradually become boring you are at the point of no return. Eventually you'll tell someone that recoil is all in his head, and he'll think you're lieing or nuts. I don't know if it's a comedy or a tragedy but it's an old story. Then consider that there are other cartridges that are in a whole different universe than a little bitty 45. ;).

What ammo did you try out?

I loaded my 416 Rigby with 100 gr of reloder 22 and a 400 gr Hornady. According to my manual that should be right close to 2400 fps. (CZ 550 safari classic). Recoil is manageable but not particularly enjoyable. I'm going to load it down to something more enjoyable.... Any suggestions?

Say what you will about usefullness, it would be a great comfort to be hunting large game with a seriously big cal in Grizzly Country. Nice to know you can say NO and mean it:)

In the Rigby I was getting 2850 with 350 gr Xs and Mag tips, with 102 grs of H 4350.
