Have a like new 300 Savage I picked up from fellow nuz great guy any way absolutely perfect shape model 99e 1 box of factory rounds since new 1951, now the question knowing it is realistically only good to 300 yards I am thinking a straight 4 Power in some make and model what say you!! Thanks for the input have many long range high end scopes not looking for another nightforce for this one trying to think outside that $$$$ BOX only use may be couple days a year.

I have a few Savage 99's in 300 Savage cal.
Don't waste your money on a VX-1, get a VX 11 (at least) in either a straight 4X
or a good old 2x7, 3X9, or any power in between will be fine in my opinion.
You'll be suprised what a 300 Savage can do. My wife hunts with a bolt gun in that caliber, I've got a load that puts a 150 grain bullet out the muzzle at almost 2800 FPS.

Agree with another big ugly man , keep it compact and light. I put an old Bushnell scopechief 1-4 on one of mine good glass and $150 . I'm assuming yours is on a savage 99 , if you have the eyes for it search peep sights

I have a Remington 700 "Classic" in 300 Savage. One of the most accurate factory hunting rifles I own.

I have a Leupold 6x36 on it, and that seems just right for my type of hunting here in PG.
I can reach 2800+ fps with the 150 grain bullets and Reloder 15 or Vihtavuori N540.

Regards, Dave.

Here is another vote for the Leupold VX-3 1.5-5X20mm... just about a perfect scope for that rifle.

If you don't want to spend that much then go with the VX-2 1-4X20mm... IMO.

Still thinking a straight 4 Power can't see having the need to dial up any more than 4 power out to 300 yards?

But you may want less than 4X under 50 yards, especially if the target is moving. If you are a paper shooter , by all means get the straight 4X, if not get the 1.5 -4 variable.

I used a Leupold M8 4x for years and never felt handicaped in the least. I killed deer from 10 yards to considerably north of 300, it's lightweight, robust and has very good eye relief. Fixed powers seem to be passe in favor of high power variables with large objectives and 30mm tubes , but for realistic big game hunting situations the 4x gives up nothing and IMHO looks better on classic rifles.

Funny, it never occurred to me that it was anything but even though I know there are other options.
