Hey all,

So I recently bought a S&W M&P 15 Sport II which is a AR style rifle. I have not shot it yet but it came with iron sights and I would like some sort of optic to put on it. I have been searching the internet for options and I have been out of the scene for 5 years now and am not sure what is decent, what is garbage or what my options even are.

What kind of shooting do I want to do? I think 50-300 yards is what I hope to accomplish with this rifle. I saw a Burris scope that had 2 options of a scope and a red dot ontop which was nice. I also saw magnifiers that flip in front of the reddot which would also be cool as that will help me get further out there.

So what options do I have? Now the rifle is about $1000, I am not going to spend more than the rifle on optics as I am shooting paper and just learning for now. If it makes sense to spend more money I will but what brand names should I look at? Any multi distance options?

Also, will any AR style magazine fit into my m&p 15 sport II?

Thanks

Yes this is what I saw and was talking about but it's like $900. 1st, is this scope good or just decent? 2nd is there anything better for similar money?

I have a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 1.5-4x20 on one of my AR's. It is working out well so far.

Auggie D.

I saw those as well but they ain't cheap either. I guess people are telling me I gotta go expensive

With hunting rifles the rule of thumb was always that your optic should be worth about the same amount as the gun you're putting it on.

I have a Smith &Wesson M&P 15 sport with a bushnell AR 4.5-18 x40 scope on it. It is advertised to be good to 600 yards with the drop zone reticle. I have shot it to 300 yards with good results. Not a bad scope for less than $300 tax in.

Those with bottomless wallets will tell you that you must spend big, what you need is a scope with decent glass that tracks reliably and has a reticule you like. There's more than a few scopes in the $500 range that will serve you well.

I'm needing to get some glass also. Since it'll be mostly for working up loads I'm leaning towards a Bushnell 10X, simple, cheap, and reliable by most accounts. That or it will be a 1-4X24 probably a Bushnell but there are several to choose from in the $300-$500 range.

if its not a hunting rifle then your optics need to be twice as expensive as the gun it s on!
:)
50 to 300 yards i would be looking at a ta31 acog

Ha. I am sure that's a great scope. I'm not sure if I wanna spend that kind of money though.

I was originally thinking something like that but I might wanna do 3gun when I get better at it and from what I see, you need to also be able to shoot targets that are fairly close.

Yeah I got a PM yesterday with some cheaper suggestions from Bushnell and a few other manufactures. Just when I read reviews, everybody compares them to $2000 scopes that people use in Iraq or Afghanistan so I am not sure how good of a review it is as I am just shooting paper and steel.

I am going to go to a few stores this weekend and see if I can narrow it down a little.

Hey man, I just bought an M&P sport 2 as well, just picked it up from P&D Monday, I threw on a Vortex Strike Eagle, and vortex mount, nice 1-6 optic. Alittle heavy with the optic on, but I have a Holosun 503C (or 512 can't remember) red dot as a back up in case I don't like the extra weight from the strike eagle. Just a couple options for ya, that won't break the bank

Stick to a 4 or 6 x max. Unless you are building a precision rig anything over wont be fun other than shooting from a bench.

Yeah I am still not sure. I have been reading all day. I'd like to spend $400 max but I keep reading about how awesome aimpoint is and how people were deployed with the same aimpoint that they use now. I'm still gonna go in and touch them before I buy.

I haven't done any 3 gun or anything of the sort, and just shot at 100 yards max so far, but I originally opted for a holographic (6 MOA dot ?) with flip-to-side 5X multiplier. I found this combo would be fine for closer range, but decided the large dot magnified for longer range doesn't provide for much 'precision', so I'm switching over to a scope with PEPR style mount and will put the holographic on top. I am awaiting receipt of the Bushnell AR scope, but have opted for the 3-12X40 since I felt the exit pupil on 18X might be an issue.

The Bushnell is on Amazon right now for $173, great price! There is another thread on this scope. I really liked the overall length (12"), 12X magnification availability for my old eyes, target turrets if you opt to dial in but has the .223 BDC as well, and it has side parallax adjustment, a great package of features for a great price.
