Rugger 10/22 barrel problems, Where to get new barrels?

Hello fellow CGN'rs a couple of years ago I purchased a bone stock base model Ruger 10/22 and have been enjoying it ever since. With the help of a couple forum sponsors I have been slowly upgrading my 10/22 :). Recently I took my 10/22 barrel off while doing a more thorough cleaning and I noticed what looks to be a semi circular "dent" near the chamber see picture. I figure that this damage is going to harm to overall accuracy. I am very curious as to how this "dent" even came about? My plan was to replace the stock barrel with the 20in Ruger Hammer Forged Target barrel. Does anyone know of any forum sponsors that would be be stocking or able to bring in these barrels. Is there any recommendations other than Dlask for barrels. All help would be appreciated.

Why don't you want a Dlask or any other aftermarket barrel? They are usually far superior to Ruger factory barrels.

I would imagine that dent has been there all along as there is very little that you could do that could cause it. My guess is it was the guide of the chamber reamer that made it and that your chamber was bored out of line at the factory, something all too common on mass produced factory barrels. TC is (in)famous for it.

I have one of the factory SS bull barrels that I sent to a fellow CGN'er for rechambering because it was so inaccurate with every type of ammo I tried and even after rechambering it sucks the big one. It sits on my shelf collecting dust. You'll pay way more for the factory barrel unless you can get one cheap off the EE because the last owner wasn't happy with it and replaced it with an aftermarket but that's your choice to make.

If you do want a new factory barrel Location Snapshots is the Ruger warranty depot and Canadian supplier of factory parts.

Was it the newer hammer forged model. Also where did you source the green mountain barrel here in Canada I have been looking at those.

I was looking for a slightly longer barrel that Dlask did not have in stock I will however shoot them an email. I just wanted to add that the particular Barrel I am looking for is $150 USD from Green Mountain but a similar Dlask Barrel is $300 I don't understand the significant price difference.

Squib ring, or excessive oil in the bore would cause that.
I bought a Ruger target 10/22 and it didn't shoot for ####.... replaced with a GM 20" SS fluted and now it shoots like it should.
Mystic Precision can get 10/22 barrels as well.

I am the original owner and now that I think of it there was a reason I purchased a carbon once piece rod a while back smh. My gun definitely had a squib load and to cap it off an out of battery detonation that wrecked a good mag.

I am looking at the green mountain barrels and have emails in with the two distributors listed on there website. I thought the target barrels looked cool and I appreciated the idea of hammer forging. I will however price out my after market options.

Well, that is how your barrel got ringed. Classic case of firing a barrel with an obstruction. Did you notice a change in accuracy? Sometimes a bulge makes a difference, sometimes not.

Hammer forging barrels makes for very consistent barrel to barrel accuracy, but not necessarily a more accurate barrel, especially when Ruger is making them as they are not exactly good at replacing worn tooling. With a .22 you will never wear the barrel out....lots of good aftermarket barrels out there. Check with Wanstalls and Questar as they carry some barrels as well.
 
If you're going to install a heavy barrel; you will want an aftermarket one. Stock Ruger 10/22 barrels are inaccurate because because of their sloppy chamber dimensions and the Target version isn't much better.

16" would be my choice for a heavy barrel, as it will still give you a reasonably lightweight rifle that isn't too front-heavy for offhand shooting. There should be little, if any, difference in muzzle velocity compared to a longer barrel.
 
i had a factory target version and it didn't shoot bad, liked 40 gr ammo only though. but my buddys green mountain simply did better with everything. so I bought one a 16.5 inch fluted. amazing accuracy, goes head to head with my cz's. and the 16 inch fluted gm makes the gun come alive us the 20 inch factory which handles like a pig on a shovel.
 
Thanks for all the tips I have emails in with 4 different CGN Sponsors only one (Mystic Precision) has yet to conact me back. I will update this thread if any more progress is made or I get a new barrel. Next time I will be a little more cautious with my mag dumps :)

I bought a brand new 10/22 over a year ago and had issues with Remington target ammo building up a lot of lead in about the same area. Every other brand I've shot through it is fine but the Remington could cause keyholing after 250 rounds

Mystic Precision brought in a Shilen barrel for me. It is quite accurate, 3/4" @76 yards with Eley practice.
