Hey all, I just picked up a model 41 S&W .22lr for $500. It is in awesome shape and was just wondering if I did OK on it. I got it off the original owner who bought it in the 1970's. I would post pics but I am too stupid.

$500 is an outstanding deal on a M41. I suggest you pick up a bunch of different ammo types to try out. Buy one box each of a half dozen types of ammo. Be sure to get a mix of standard velocity and high velocity. Once you fine one that you pistol likes, buy a couple of bricks. Mine really likes Remington standard velocity target so i bought 5,000 rounds for it at the time. I figure I'll pass it with some left over ammo to my grandkids some day.

Smith and Wesson suggest you use ONLY Standard velocity type ammo the forums suggest CCI SV
 
Yes Silverfox is right. Use only standard velocity ammo. NO HIGH VELOCITY.
Mine likes CCI Standard velocity and SK standard plus.

I got mine for $650 and thought I got a great deal. At $500 your situation is comparable to taking candy from a baby.... :d

Shot mine with some CCI SV ammo and could not be happier with the results. It will be as accurate as you will let it be with your skills. And as you get better it will be there to make you look good.

If I have one beef it would be the lack of a thumb rest on the left side grip to give me a more consistently locked in grip for one handed bullseye shooting. But being an avid wood worker a new set is on the "To Do" list already.

DO NOT shoot HV ammo in a M41. It will batter the frame and break the ejector. they are sprung and designed to use target/standard velocity ammo only! Possibly the brand new ones will take it, but one from the 70's certianly won't! I know, i've had to repair damage done by stupid owners caused this way! The same goes for any serious target 22 semi auto pistol.

Plus, you will get far better accuracy with the target velocity stuff, i've always had good luck with the remignton target velocity.

BTW, 500?! you where driving the getaway car dude! that's a smoking price for a clean 41!

Great deal CCI SV for sure I picked one up a few years ago from a guy who inherited it from his dad Not his cup of tea Got a deal on mine as well Super pistol Also there is a way of adjusting trigger pull by changing position of pins on gun Have not done it yet but worth a google Enjoy

Congratulations on your acquisition. You've acquired one of the finest 22LR target pistols ever made. As for the price WOW is all can say. You're a lucky CGNer. Please please please only use CCI SV ammunition. You won't regret doing so. Also, you may want to consider giving the 41 a thorough cleaning inside and out. Take the grips off and see how much crud may have built up inside over time. If it looks bad then you should seriously consider disassembling and cleaning each and every part. This is something that I do when I acquire a 41 or 46 for my collection. By doing so, your breathing new life into your pistol. At the same you'll have an opportunity to replace defective parts such as worn springs or even replace a worn down firing pin. Brownells in the US has an excellent supply of 41/46 parts available for refurbishing your 41. Below you'll find the URLs for diassembly and assembly of the 41/46.
