Shortening a Revolver barrel?

First off I haven't owned any pistols for a few years now so not up to date on the legalities.

My question is if I order a new revolver with a 7.5" barrel and have it cut down to 6" how does one go about re-registering it after the fact?

My plan is to add a aftermarket ghost ring sight of some sort.

Also, any recommendations on a good guy to do this, preferably in Western Canada?

Thanks in advance.

No recommendation on a 'smith, but you can legally cut that barrel to as short as 106mm without worry and there is no re-registration issue because it was a handgun to start with.

why would it matter as long as it isn't less then 4.75 I think it is. or just order a 6" in the first place

Barrel length is printed on the registration certificate. The gun should probably match the paperwork.

I have a Ruger SRH in 454 Casull and I also want it to be shortened to 106mm.

I know Ruger made the Toklat version (+/- 5") for the SRH, I was wondering if it's possible to order the barrel only?

If not or if it is ridiculously expensive, I'll prefer to cut down the barrel.

Mr Murray is the best in that case?

Ruger has a rep for not shipping parts and wanting to fit them at the factory.

They will also restore your gun to original specs or fit upgraded parts to it; so don't send a gun with an expensive hair-trigger job or a three-screw Blackhawk model that you don't want the upgrade for.

What is your idea of "ridiculously expensive"?

The bill for cutting, crowning and remounting the front sight isn't going to be cheap by any standards. I'm sure you're looking at something north of $200 and perhaps even $300 or more.

I'd recommend Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC. He does great work, and AFAIK he can provide the Verification service as well.

His webpage suggests shortening a barrel and refitting a sight starts at $225.

Is it possible to have a currently prohibited revolver like a 4" shortened to 2.5" or 3" and verified?

Since it is already prohibited, you are not changing its status, just taking an 1-1.5" off the 4" barrel.

Unlike shortening a longer barrel doing this would require a lot more work. The ejector would need to be shortened and the front mounting point for the nose of the ejector moved as well. That's a LOT of small pieces that need attention. If a basic barrel and sight job is roughly $225 as above I'm thinking that this much work is going to cost more than the gun is currently worth.

If I went to 3" from 4" I think the ejector would be fine, just need to re-mount the front sight, which i hate anyway (red ramp on stainless steel). Much prefer a black sight or fibre optic.
