No small game between June16 to August31 in north Ontario & part of central Ontario?

Hi hunters,

I just want to make sure if it is legal for me to hunt small game in the area i wanted to go this week, and i hope you guys can help me confirm if I understand the 2016 hunting regulation correctly.

I am planning to hunt something(any small game) and potentially do some back-country camping and fishing this week at somewhere north, but i just found out the small game license is not valid in this period in the 2016 regulation in north Ontario and some part of southeast Ontario.

By comparing the crownland map online and the regulation book, it looks like at this period, i am totally ok to bring my rifle, do some shooting, find some small game, camp for a night or two and do some fishing in WMU 54, 55B, 57, and 56 as long as they are crown land.

is this correct?

or if you guys know who I can call to confirm this information, please let me know!

thanks a lot

Lucas

Your information appears to be correct. However, keep in mind that what many hunt in terms of small game (grouse, squirrels, rabbits/hares, for example) have closed seasons during the time period you are interested in. You can, however, hunt what many consider "pest" species; groundhogs (if you can find one or two), starlings, crows, blackbirds, etc.

Call the closest OMNRF office to where you wish to hunt, for further clarification.

thanks! what about other areas? for example , rabbit and hare, the regulation shows the open season only start as early as September, so in Ontario, the earliest time i can hunt rabbit no matter where will be september, is this correct?

That is correct for those WMU's, but there isn't much that's still in season.

thanks! you said "thoses WMU's", does that mean there is other WMU's that has more to hunt? location isn't really a problem as long as its within around 7 hours of driving distance within toronto

Read the regulations summary... it is clear... all WMU's north of the French and Mattawa Rivers are closed for small game from June 15th to September 1st... for specific dates check the reg's.

It's farther south than that now. The line has dropped below Algonquin Park. It was much simpler when the line was just the French River.

Its been that way for as long as I can remember. Stating the obvious its brood rearing time for all species including big game and I would suspect as well if the line has been moved further south safety may be a factor as well since its also the time of year the woods are flooded with toursists, campers, cottagers etc.

If you check the WMU map in the regulations booklet, you will notice a broken line running through the entire province from west to east, falling well below the Algonquin Park southern boundary. In some cases, the restrictions apply to part of or all of the WMU's you stated. That means that there's NO open seasons for small game above that line until Sept 15 at the earliest. Except for target practice (as demonstrated by setting up in a safe area, under controlled conditions),possession of any firearm will get you in plenty of hot water really quick.

Bring your fishin pole......Leave the rifle home until September ! No fun hunting in the Summer too hot and too many bugs/leaves etc....except maybe ground hogs or coyotes on a fresh feeling summer evening. Summer is for scouting, trail cams and target practice at the range.
